Travelblog: Seminar

http://www.gregmatthewsblog.blogspot.com/2009/08/seminar.html

A blog used for documenting my travels to Africa since 2009. Thursday, August 13, 2009. Today I'm giving a seminar about the project. Let's see if this nifty document uploader thingy will work. It worked, although I couldn't edit the HTML to default to slide mode, so you can choose that from the menu: More - View Mode - Slide Mode. Use the full screen toggle button at the top right of the window if it is too small. No response to “Seminar”. A graduate student in Sociology at the University of Washington.

Travelblog: Noises

http://www.gregmatthewsblog.blogspot.com/2009/08/noises.html

A blog used for documenting my travels to Africa since 2009. Thursday, August 27, 2009. I swear I just heard a lion attack an elephant. It's hard to imagine a lion being so brave. But first I heard the angriest lion roar I've ever heard. Then a loud elephant trumpet. I had never heard that before. Maybe they were teaming up against a poacher. I could never get used to these noises. 2 Responses to “Noises”. September 18, 2009 at 12:26 PM. Youll get used to the noises, dont worry! View my complete profile.

I also can't imagine he gets enough calories from the little dried grass on the ground this winter. Here's the evidence. Plus a picture showing the mountains in the background. One response to “ ”. Bookish Dave: May 2015

http://bookishdave.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

This is my blog. Welcome. Wednesday, May 27, 2015. I don't have cholera! So says this piece of paper. Ive had big stomach issues the past three days so went to the doctor. Im taking cipro and got an anti-parasite drug as well. Im fine and it will pass. I think its just a bad case of food poisoning (though not as bad as Jennys episode two years ago in Tanzania). More observations on my experience at a Cuban clinic when I return. Day 2: Guadalajara - DF - Havana. The thing about cuba is that its in the Car...

Bookish Dave: Day 10: Trinidad (first full day)

http://bookishdave.blogspot.com/2015/06/day-10-trinidad-first-full-day.html

This is my blog. Welcome. Saturday, June 6, 2015. Day 10: Trinidad (first full day). We got a late start, and it was a pretty lazy day. After breakfast we went to get wifi -2.50 CUCs ($2.50) for half an hour. We googled what to say to immigration authorities when coming back to the US. We did a lot of this:. And drank tons of water. Dinner - stuffed peppers at our casa. Jenny dancing with the local guy. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). To Get Rich is Glorious. Thoughts regarding On the Run. The End of...

Bookish Dave: Day 5 - Fidel's revenge

http://bookishdave.blogspot.com/2015/06/day-5-fidels-revenge.html

This is my blog. Welcome. Saturday, June 6, 2015. Day 5 - Fidel's revenge. I tossed and turned all of last night, going from having chills to sweating out what I thought was s fever. I had a nightmare about being sick while I was getting sick. Most likely I got sick from a Cuban sandwich, or from the ice at Casa de Musica (which unbeknownst to be, they do not purify). So, today has been tough. Our guide drove around Conan O'Brien a couple months ago when we was filming a bunch of segments. After the tour...

Bookish Dave: Day 6: Havana to Vinales

http://bookishdave.blogspot.com/2015/06/day-6-havana-to-vinales.html

This is my blog. Welcome. Saturday, June 6, 2015. Day 6: Havana to Vinales. So we parted ways with the guy. Was he a nice guy who wanted to talk with foreigners (as he claimed at the beginning, saying that since Cubans couldn't travel abroad until recently, this is how he learned about the world)? Was he a charlatan? I have no idea. Update: I'm at a local clinic right now and in the patio, there are about 20 pairs of latex gloves lying in the sun. I assume they are being washed, dried, and re-used).

Bookish Dave: January 2015

http://bookishdave.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

This is my blog. Welcome. Friday, January 9, 2015. Arrived at SFO exhausted. But glad to be home. And what do I see, in the cab, three blocks from my apartment, but a man taking a dump on the sidewalk. What kind of a place allows humans to do such a thing? When SF is known as being that place where all the homeless live. Is this humane? But my more immediate thought is why do I live here, again? Thursday, January 8, 2015. It happened again: medium city love. My cab drivers today:. After a few interviews ...

Bookish Dave: December 2014

http://bookishdave.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

This is my blog. Welcome. Wednesday, December 31, 2014. A few cultural observations. New Zealanders love 80s music. Its everywhere, and (I kid you not) might get more airplay than co temporary music. There are heaps (to use a kiwi/Australian term) of Mexican restaurants here. Since NZ is an outdoors-focused society, I thought there would be lots of beards here, but there arent. This post is asynchronous with others. Also, Bruno Mars kills it. Im obsessed with large container ships, and was lucky enough t...

Bookish Dave: Day 9 - Vinales to Trinidad

http://bookishdave.blogspot.com/2015/06/day-9-vinales-to-trinidad.html

This is my blog. Welcome. Saturday, June 6, 2015. Day 9 - Vinales to Trinidad. So, jenny and I claimed the front seat and middle seats in hopes we'd be ok. Our fellow travelers were very gracious and understood. Way to go Phillips family - panic attacks waiting to happen! A huge thunderstorm struck around 7pm and lasted an hour. My first big storm since Alabama last September. I opened the windows and watched. I miss thunderstorms. Outside our casa's room in Trinidad, during rainstorm. I don't have time ...

Bookish Dave: Day 4 - Havana (day 2)

http://bookishdave.blogspot.com/2015/06/day-4-havana-day-2.html

This is my blog. Welcome. Saturday, June 6, 2015. Day 4 - Havana (day 2). We were tired and hungry, and by the grace of God found a modern restaurant with air conditioning and a good menu. The restaurant, Sloppy Joe's, is a refurbished version of an old mobster hangout. Jenny had a sloppy joe (same as we got in elementary school), and I had a Cuban sandwich. You know the image of old Cubans sitting on a stoop in blazing hot weathers, with their shirts off smoking cigars? Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Bookish Dave: June 2015

http://bookishdave.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html

This is my blog. Welcome. Saturday, June 6, 2015. Jenny and I were a bit nervous about whether wed have trouble coming back through U.S. immigration. We were both completely honest - we said on customs forms that we had been to Cuba. Neither of us had any problem getting through. They didnt ask any questions at all. You had three electronic devices when you entered the country. Do you still have them? Show me. Did you interview anybody? The woman was just doing her job. She was very pleasant. I'm glad we...

Greg's Blog

A Naming Service for Overlay Networks. I earned a Master of Computer Science degree at the University of Virginia a few years back. My master's project. Was to write a secure, peer-to-peer name resolution protocol for the HyperCast. There was some flux in life around the time that I finished my degree. Our daughter was born and my academic adviser left the country within a week or two after I presented. My work. All of that was followed by a job search, and, well, the report got lost in the shuffle.
