Building a Grey Seal

Building a Grey Seal. Wednesday, July 9, 2014. As he promised, Brad Linthicum. Disappointed in the sails. Brad Linthicum takes my check, gives me my sails, and shakes my hand. Assistant Mary Anne looks on. The mainsail raised for the first time. I still need to install an outhaul on the boom, which should be a simple proposition. I also need to decide how to route the jib sheets back to the cockpit, but that is a job for another day. View of mast hoops. They don't droop anymore. Monday, June 30, 2014.

Building a Grey Seal: She floats!

http://greysealbuilder.blogspot.com/2014/03/she-floats.html

Building a Grey Seal. Sunday, March 23, 2014. Once it starts, will it keep running? Will the high tech packless stuffing box actually work? Will the epoxy crack and allow a seam to open up while trailering to the launch site? Will the ballast fall off? Will the travel lift fail and drop her on the ground? Lagniappe suspended by WoW's two gantries. A boy and his trailer. Ready for the trailer. A full crew, Jerry, Newt, John, and Robinson and me watch Lee work. Friday morning, we hooked up and drove the tr...

Building a Grey Seal: Rigging: Part II

http://greysealbuilder.blogspot.com/2014/06/rigging-part-ii.html

Building a Grey Seal. Monday, June 30, 2014. Mainsail halyards lead back to cockpit. The Dyneema bridle and peak halyard. In addition to the bridle, I used Dyneema for the running backstays, and for the topping lift. All the halyards are 3/8 inch double braided dacron polyester. Topping lift cleated to mast on port side, jib halyard through block on starboard side. Strops, also Dyneema, hold mainsheet blocks. My son Andrew and his girlfriend Alysha visited at the end of May. The sails are going to be dac...

Building a Grey Seal: Rigging: Part I

http://greysealbuilder.blogspot.com/2014/04/rigging-part-i.html

Building a Grey Seal. Wednesday, April 16, 2014. As a novice sailboat rigger, it is nice to know that there really are many, many ways to skin this cat. Shrouds and headstay taped to base of mast. The upper end of stays swedged and fastened to mast ring with shackles. At a very reasonable price. I learned to splice single braid Dyneema from a really nice video. Dyneema eye-spliced running backstays held in place by thumb cleats. A long stretch of spaghetti. As you can see, I have decided to add a traditi...

Building a Grey Seal: Getting there

http://greysealbuilder.blogspot.com/2014/02/snow-snow-and-more-snow.html

Building a Grey Seal. Sunday, February 23, 2014. Bosco Brown checks out the latest snowfall in the back yard. The engine installation has been occupying most of my time. With occasional valuable consultation offered by Jeff Huffenberger, the head of the Workshop, tasks have gone pretty smoothly. The engine is now connected to raw water, fuel, prop shaft, and exhaust. It is bolted to the bearers, and even connected to the battery. In other words, it is fully INSTALLED! PSS fully assembled, shaft and coupl...

Canoe Yawl... Someday: January 2014

http://canoeyawlsomeday.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html

Canoe Yawl. Someday. Building a sailboat to Iain Oughtred's Eun Mara design. Sunday, January 12, 2014. Well, the holidays have come and gone. The past busy month and a half have left me with less time for boaty things. For the most time I've dealt with that by neglecting the internet portions of my boating hobby, though the building part has slowed a bit, too. Here's a view from a different angle. Posted by D. Handron. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Building the Eun Mara "Skerry". Building a Grey Seal.

From STEM to Stern. Saturday, April 7, 2012. FUBAR and fitting floors. Dan gets the floor right. We planed the floors to level them. Rashid and Bryan practiced planking. Brianna, Dan and Gersty worked on floors by chiseling and beveling. Dan messed up twice, Gersty 3 times and Brianna had it right the first time. Because as Gina said, girls have more patience. Ian worked with Nick to line off. Chico was busy with his girlfriend and Stanajah got lost on her way over here. Brianna shows them how it's done.

From STEM to Stern. Thursday, May 24, 2012. April 11, 2012. Today we learned very valuable skills to apply to our life. We used a planer on various items all of which were wood based. Next we sat the wood down to be heated, using clamps we attached the piece of wood to the boat.". Workshop on the Water. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Workshop on the Water. From STEM to Stern. Monday, May 28, 2012. A tree was wasted. April 18, 2012. Today we've done spiling. Though a lengthy process in the end it comes with great accuracy. Also we learn measuring is a hard process from some people. A cut will not come out good unless your lines are straight and clear. A tree was wasted today to do some mistakes". Workshop on the Water. Canoe Yawl. Someday. Building a sailboat to Iain Oughtred's Eun Mara design. Wednesday, August 28, 2013. Well it's been some time since my last update. I have been working, but truthfully - it's not very interesting. Or photogenic. But that is set to change soon, so I thought I'd set the stage. Rough surface left by wood flour mixture. Smoother surface left by fairing compound. Tools of the trade. I had been using the station moulds as a reference for marking the scarf joints, and so all the joints fall ...

http://canoeyawlsomeday.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html

Canoe Yawl. Someday. Building a sailboat to Iain Oughtred's Eun Mara design. Tuesday, June 11, 2013. Experimenting with fiberglass cloth over the plank lands. I don't want to round over the edges of the planking more than I need to, so I made up a test piece from some scrap. My System Three squeegee makes an appropriately sized fillet. The cloth clings nicely to both the inside and outside curves. The radius left by the tongue depressor is too tight! Posted by D. Handron. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).
