Spatula: June 2012
http://aspatula.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html
Saturday, June 9, 2012. New York: Robert Appleton Company,. As many now know, authoritarian governments from the past are not the only ones who seek to increase control over their populace. In 2011, despite earlier promises to the contrary ( http:/ www.usccb.org/news/archived.cfm? Thus began a struggle between the State and the Church that Bishop Daniel Jenky of Peoria, IL, characterized as another Kulturkampf ( http:/ www.thecatholicpost.com/post/PostArticle.aspx? 8211; this is his entire homily, not th...

Honor Today: July 2013
http://honortoday.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html
Thursday, July 11, 2013. De Tocqueville's Democracy in America. I said I was going to read Tocqueville's Democracy in America. And I have been, but due to my particular aversion to the details of American government, I started with Volume 2, and now I'm half way through Volume I. I'm also reading a recent biography of Tocqueville at the same time, Tocqueville: The Aristocratic Sources of Liberty. By Lucien Jaume. Plus, I'm reading a book for review for The European Legacy. But that's another story.

Wednesday, November 20, 2013. Honor in Education: Air Force Academy. While I sympathize with instructors at the Academy, who have endured some embarrassing discoveries of widespread academic dishonesty (in 2007, fifteen cadets were expelled for cheating and three others resigned, and in 2004, something similar had occurred- USA Today. The honor code at the Academy reads, "We will not lie, steal, or cheat, nor tolerate among us anyone who does.". Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). How we got here.

Monday, December 12, 2011. Hitler and Chamberlain at Munich. Mel Brooks famously said, "But by using the medium of comedy, we can try to rob Hitler of his posthumous power and myths." I humbly offer the notion of Adolf Hitler and Neville Chamberlain discussing something more mundane than the dismemberment of Czechoslovakia at the Munich Conference:. Links to this post. Honor Today: Solid but Low: The Challenge for Honor
http://honortoday.blogspot.com/2014/03/solid-but-low-challenge-for-honor.html
Thursday, March 13, 2014. Solid but Low: The Challenge for Honor. This is a quote from Martin Diamond's essay, "Ethics and Politics: The American Way," which sums up the challenge for honor in modern liberal democracy. The new policy is Madison's solution to the problem of faction- the large commercial republic which thrives and relies upon self-interest. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Honor Today: February 2014
http://honortoday.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html
Tuesday, February 11, 2014. No Downton Abbey in America. So there is a loss of a kind of servant-honor, and there is a loss of a certain kind of kinship, too. Because the same families, servants and masters, are settled on the same estates for generations, they are intertwined as a kind of family. "Long-shared memories unite them, and however different they be, yet they grow alike.". Reminiscent of Marx's lament in the Communist Manifesto. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). How we got here.

Spatula: SEC Football in Big Trouble
http://aspatula.blogspot.com/2012/07/sec-football-in-big-trouble.html
Monday, July 23, 2012. SEC Football in Big Trouble. Today, Mark Emmert, NCAA president, issued a series of wholly justifiable and appropriate sanctions against Penn State (my alma mater) football in the wake of the damning Freeh report on the Jerry Sandusky sex scandal involving little boys. If you think this is ridiculous, but that Penn State deserved the sanctions and penalties it received for letting its football program get out of hand, then you’re a hypocrite.
