http://gossipsofrivertown.blogspot.com/2013/10/election-prep.html
Monday, October 28, 2013. The proposed amendment to section 9 of article 1 of the Constitution would allow the Legislature to authorize up to seven casinos in New York State for the legislated purposes of promoting job growth, increasing aid to schools, and permitting local governments to lower property taxes through revenues generated. Shall the amendment be approved? Despite the distracting language of the proposal- Who would say no. The exclusion of sewer debt from the constitutional debt limits was o...

The Gossips of Rivertown: Icebergs in August
http://gossipsofrivertown.blogspot.com/2015/08/icebergs-in-august.html
Friday, August 7, 2015. There's nothing like a good story, and this year's Olana summer fundraising party has a great story as its inspiration. In 1859, Frederic Church and his friend Louis Legrand Noble took a month-long schooner cruise in the North Atlantic, in the vicinity of Labrador and Newfoundland. The monumental painting The Icebergs. Was an outcome of that adventure. When the painting was unveiled in New York on April 24, 1861, the New-York Daily Tribune. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

The Gossips of Rivertown: Fool Me Once . . .
http://gossipsofrivertown.blogspot.com/2015/08/fool-me-once.html
Thursday, August 6, 2015. Fool Me Once . . . After an extended hiatus, work has resumed at 215 Union Street- the house once believed would be the c. 1810 house that stood at 900 Columbia Street "reassembled. By the time the project came before the Historic Preservation Commission in January 2014. The notion of reassembling the 200-year-old house had been reduced to reusing some of the materials salvaged during its demolition: the bricks, the door surround, and the limestone window sills. Terry Law and Ll...

Friday, August 7, 2015. What Can Done With the Dunn Building. In a meeting that lasted for an hour and a half on Wednesday evening, representatives of Saratoga Associates presented the findings of the feasibility study on the Dunn building, one of the last surviving industrial buildings on Hudson's waterfront. Someone who had attended the presentation on July 1. Which had not been open to the public, told Gossips. To describe the concepts presented, others (privately) chose the adjective generic. The Gossips of Rivertown: House History and House Mystery
http://gossipsofrivertown.blogspot.com/2015/08/house-history-and-house-mystery.html
Friday, August 7, 2015. House History and House Mystery. Last summer, the kitchen addition at the Dr. Oliver Bronson House, built toward the end of the 19th century, was removed. And this summer, work is underway to restore the south wall of the house, where the addition had been. Identical wainscoting is found on the interior wall of the bay, below the windows, so the presumption is that this piece was dislodged during the ongoing work on the foundation in this area of the building. Show that you value.

The Gossips of Rivertown: Ear to the Ground
http://gossipsofrivertown.blogspot.com/2015/07/ear-to-ground.html
Wednesday, July 1, 2015. Ear to the Ground. Has received word that two studies of interest to the citizens of Hudson have been completed, but it seems it will be a while before the public learns the results of either one of them. The first is the outcome of the item by item analysis of the single bid received. And the value engineering for the police and court building. That all involved are "working to stay with the plan submitted to OCA. The second is the feasibility study. At this very moment, the fin...

The Gossips of Rivertown: What's Planned for Jonesburg
http://gossipsofrivertown.blogspot.com/2015/08/whats-planned-for-jonesburg.html
Wednesday, August 5, 2015. What's Planned for Jonesburg. A drive out south of Hudson recently on Route 9 caused me to wonder, as I always do, about the plans for the little row of houses built by Fred W. Jones in the 1880s for his workers at the New York Shell Marble and Coral Company. Jonesburg in 1926 Photo courtesy Peter Cipkowski. Last winter, Gossips. That it hasn't been decided if the original clapboard will be restored, or if the houses will be re-sided. This row of houses was not built by Fred W&...

Thursday, August 6, 2015. The Scandal of 1922: Part VI. He and Cunningham were introduced to two Hudson women whom "Knocker" Alger brought up in an automobile and introduced to them in front of the Worth House. Then they went to the Race place. He refused to answer any questions as to improper relations with these women. He stated that on the occasion of these trips to the Race place he charged the expenses of these trips to the agency. In reply to a question as to whether he and Cunningham had hired an ...
