Growing Steady: January 2015
http://www.growingsteady.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
Sunday, January 11, 2015. The Mad Propagationist, Part 1. Before the discovery of heat mats, the gardening year for me would end in October and start up again in March. The only horticulturally stimulating thing that ever really happened during winter was venturing outside during the occasional arctic blast to wrap Christmas lights and blankets around some of the more subtropical plants (not fun). Now that I'm armed with a greenhouse and a propagation station in the garage, the gardening year never ends.

Monday, May 4, 2015. Real is pretty much always better than fake, but when it comes to rocks, there's just something about an artificial rock that I find fascinating. Armed with some mortar mix and a few how-to videos off YouTube, I set out to create a few of my own. Here is the before shot:. Step 3: I experimented with different mortar mixes. This mixture in the photo below is a 3:2 mix of Portland cement to Lane Mountain sand. It hardened into a very dense material that was completely smooth an...And n...
Growing Steady: Far Reaches Farm...Finally!
http://www.growingsteady.com/2014/09/far-reaches-farmfinally.html
Friday, September 26, 2014. Far Reaches Farm. Finally! Last week I finally made it to Far Reaches Farm. In Port Townsend, WA for the very first time. I was completely determined to go this year before they closed for the season. Their selection of plants is mind-boggling. Like Plant Delights Nursery in North Carolina or Cistus Nursery in Oregon, this is a horticultural hotspot. And being the horticultural hotspot that it is, I did manage to pick up a few plants:. Top row (from left):. Nice job with the pu...

Monday, May 19, 2014. Why One Podophyllum Delavayi Just Isn't Enough. Had been close to the top on my plant wish list for many years until I finally scored one from Dan Hinkley last summer. Isn't it beautiful? So you would think that when Far Reaches Farm sent out an e-mail a few months ago saying they had Podophyllum delavayi. In stock, I wouldn't need to order one because I already had one. You would be wrong. From Far Reaches Farm. From Woodland Way/Hortlandia 2014. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). The Exo...

Thursday, February 26, 2015. The 2015 Northwest Flower and Garden Show. The timing of the Northwest Flower and Garden Show in mid-February coincides perfectly with the capitulation of winter. The endless arrays of flowers are always a sight to see, but the richness of the show for me is in its fresh ideas. West Seattle Nursery repurposed left over Christmas trees by slicing up their trunks and drilling holes to create mason bee huts. Most things were not so practical. NW Flower and Garden Show. Exotic gardening @ 55° North: Charleville House, Enniskerry
http://fiftyfivedegreesnorth.blogspot.com/2015/06/charleville-house-enniskerry.html
Exotic gardening @ 55° North. Thursday, 25 June 2015. Charleville House, Enniskerry. Charleville House near Enniskerry, Co. Wicklow is a large private garden that occasionally opens its doors to allow the great unwashed in. It's close to the more famous house and gardens of Powerscourt, which overlook it from a distance. Nowadays the property is owned by Kenneth Rohan, a property developer with an interest in fine art, so security is tight. Catananche, or Cupid's dart. I've never managed to establish Sol...

Exotic gardening @ 55° North. Thursday, 15 August 2013. You could say that, but it's one that I'll admit to, even in polite company. I grow numerous types and I'll cover each of them in turn over time. The Asiatics that I've been turned on to are those with outward and downward facing flowers. They're just better looking plants, with the blooms spaced out at the top of the adequately tall stalk and hanging their heads coyly. Today I'll start of with a stunner called Lilium 'Pink Flavour'. The only downsi...

Exotic gardening @ 55° North: The time is nigh
http://fiftyfivedegreesnorth.blogspot.com/2015/05/time-to-cut.html
Exotic gardening @ 55° North. Saturday, 23 May 2015. The time is nigh. Sadly I can hold out no longer. It's past the middle of May and the lawn must be hacked back to something a little more presentable. The garden needs tidying in preparation for planting out the tenders for the summer. However, before any of that happens the lawn (I use that word loosely as I am no slave to turf care) needs the attention of the mower. Off with their heads! Hopefully it plays ball this time, wish me luck.
