Reborn in the Village of Pineapples. Today, there was quite a ruckus after fourth period class right before lunch. It turns out a bird (known here as akashobin. Or ruddy kingfisher) had flown into the school, smacked against a window, and found itself not so much capable of immediately flying back out. Students and teachers gathered around, nobody willing to take the first step in getting the bird to safety. Here's a shot I took before picking the bird up and getting him out of the men's bathroom.

Reborn in the Village of Pineapples. Sea Creatures that Sting. Yesterday, I had a very interesting first experience: I was stung by a venomous creature in the waters of Higashi. During the summer, groups of students from two villages on the mainland of Japan come to Higashi to participate in an exchange program of sorts. While only lasting for a few days, one of those days is always spent at the beach. The kids swim, canoe, snorkel, and ride a banana boat (seen below). It's really great fun.

Reborn in the Village of Pineapples. Anyway, it's gotten cold in Okinawa. What's cold? There's no official measure, but to me it's the feeling of having to wear long sleeve shirts and long pants to stay warm, even in my own home. Granted, the temperature is more likely somewhere around the lower-60s, but in Japan (especially in my teachers' housing) lack of insulation and heating systems makes even mild temperatures sometimes feel downright cold. Reborn in the Village of Pineapples. It's been four years since I've been back to the US since coming to Okinawa. I'm heading back for a combination of reasons. The impetus for the trip came from my friend Dougal who is getting married on June 19th. Before and after the wedding, I will be meeting up with family in a couple of different locations.
