The early introduction of needle and syringe exchange and substitute prescribing helped prevent an HIV epidemic amongst injecting drug users in the UK. However, it is an epidemic that has been averted, rather than prevented and we must maintain efforts to educate injecting drug users as well as improve the services that continue to prevent HIV infections. Hepatitis B is a serious but preventable infection. Hep B is particularly dangerous in people whose liver has been damaged by hepatitis C. It is therefore important that injecting drug users are vaccinated to give them hepatitis B immunity. The campaign resources are designed to support services in providing vaccination and increase uptake by informing:. Drug service providers about the virus, it's transmission and prevention; and. Overdose deaths are far too frequent, and they are both predictable and preventable. The od campaign aims to make a difference – save lives – by alerting people to risk, and improving the response to overdose by services and drug users. The materials are designed to reinforce the message that substitute prescribing substantially reduces ovderdose risk, inform people about the predictors of fatal overdose ( stop overdose deaths!
