Rose Hill, Harrington, Cumbria

This group are standing where the white car above stands. A gateway round the corner in Archer street. The railway line on the bottom left of the picture came up from the harbour to join the Harrington and Lowca Light Railway at the top of Rose Hill. The photo shows it crossing a bridge over the main line parallel to the road bridge. The gradient up from the harbour was 1 in 15. Locos were known to have got out of control on it and ended up in the harbour. This is probably the result!

Park Cottage, known locally as Sparrow Castle, lies above Rose Hill. Harrington Parks Farm.The Harrington Ironworks can be seen in the background. Alexander and Margaret McCoy, who were both originally from Northern Ireland,. Lived there with several of their children. It was occupied for a time by their daughter Lizzie McCoy. The white mark on the roof is from a paint pot having been knocked over. While painting the nearest chimney stack, the furthest one having been. Sparrow Castle in 2007.
