Haslingden Grane Nature Site

Haslingden Grane set in the heart of East Lancashire has now become a very popular area and is so beautiful that it is often called "Little Scotland". It once was the home to illicit whisky distillers. We have three large Reservoirs, Calf Hey, Ogden and Holden Wood, and there are other popular places within Grane and its surrounding areas such as Fairy Glen, Troy Quarry,or just a little further afield there is the Camms....Musbury Valley or the Alden Valley...

Haslingden Grane Nature Site: Frogspawn at Calf Hey....

http://haslingdengrane.blogspot.com/2010/04/frogspawn-at-calf-hey.html

Haslingden Grane Nature Site. Thursday, 1 April 2010. Frogspawn at Calf Hey. Thanks Clifford (Hargreaves) for sending in this great photo of frogspawn on Calf Hey (taken on 23rd March 2010). Please click over photo to enlarge. The outer channel of the Reservoir seems to be a regular place for this obvious main Social Gathering of Frogs, because I also had large amounts of spawn in the same place a couple of years ago ( see earlier blog. Birds so far recorded (167). Illicit Whisky Making Etc. Recorded But...

Haslingden Grane Nature Site. Friday, 10 October 2008. What Lies Beneath .Our Ring of Bright Water. Here is a cracking picture of "Broadholden" which now lies under Ogden Reservoir - the photo is pre 1902, however the reservoir was built in 1912. The property is said to be 16th Century or possibly earlier and had a datestone 1765 Henry and Betty Hargreaves, it was possibly part of the Holden Estate. Occupied by the Kay family until Ogden Reservoir was built in 1912. Birds so far recorded (167). Breeding ...

Haslingden Grane Nature Site: Calf Hey Reservoir was empty during 1984

http://haslingdengrane.blogspot.com/2009/03/when-calf-hey-res-was-fully-empty.html

Haslingden Grane Nature Site. Wednesday, 4 March 2009. Calf Hey Reservoir was empty during 1984. I can remember the last time Calf Hey Reservoir was empty and it was the Midsummer of 1984 when we had a National drought and the North West Water Authority (as it was then called) took advantage of that situation to let the reservoir completely empty so they could carry out necessary repairs which had to be made to the Reservoir. I am glad now I took these photos at the time. Click over the photo to enlarge).

Haslingden Grane Nature Site: Additions of Moth, Flora & Fungi Species to the Grane List.

http://haslingdengrane.blogspot.com/2009/07/additions-of-moth-flora-fungi-species.html

Haslingden Grane Nature Site. Monday, 6 July 2009. Additions of Moth, Flora and Fungi Species to the Grane List. I have only just come across some very old records for Haslingden Grane which I was probably given in the 1970s but sadly the Flora and Fungi contributor remains anonymous because I just cannot remember who submitted them, and the Alden Moth list was recorded by Bernard Dunn in the 1970s. I will shortly integrate them to within the Grane List. Clavulinopsis heludola, Paxillus involutus Brown M...

Haslingden Grane Nature Site. Friday, 18 September 2009. Wed Sept 16th - Walk around Calf Hey. Charlie Payne and I had a walk around Calf Hey and we had Specked Wood and a single Wall Brown Butterfly. Monday, 31 January 2011. Local birding: Common Redpolls and Iceland Gull - 31st Jan 2011. Quality local birds began firstly with a call from Dave Bickerton who kindly invited me over to his garden at Petre Crescent, Rishton, where He and Mark Breaks had caught two Common (Mealy) Redpoll during a ringing session in DB's back garden (referred to hereafter as Rishton Bird Obs - RBO). Sunday, 15 May 2011. Local birding: Wood Sandpiper, Brockholes Nature Reserve LWT - 15th May 2011. The f4 westerlies with cloud and rain produced some nice birds on the local patch today with the first Turnstone of the spring (2 birds) seen in the morning and a splendid Wood Sandpiper (above) early evening in foul weather which eventually resulted in 'rained-up' optics. Also, a Flava Wagtail was seen very briefly in the evening was thought most likely to be Blue-headed, but not confirmed.

Monday, 16 May 2011. Local birding: Brockholes Nature Reserve LWT, Lancs - 16th May 2011. 115hrs of effort on the local patch in an f4 westerly and virtually constant heavy drizzle throughout with steadier rainfall thrown in for good measure yielded some good results. The Osprey stopped just short of the entrance and began to fish briefly before heading back upstream, allowing me time to get the record shot. Time of sighting was 07:10-07:19. What a great start to the session. At 09:20, a gargantuan flock...

Sunday, 22 May 2011. Local birding, Lancs : Brockholes NR LWT - 17th-22nd May 2011. I have put c50hrs of effort in at the local patch during the past week in much anticipated weather conditions of fresh westerly sector winds, with cloud and some rain, resulting in some some excellent wader passage recorded through the site as well as some other nice bonus birds. Turnstone: 19 recorded through the site 16th-22nd, inc a record flock of 15. Knot: 3, grey first-summer type birds. Whimbrel: Several records to...

Preston Docks, Lancs - 31st March 2011. 15hrs at Brockholes NR LWT mid-late morning provided me with a yeartick in the form of 2 Swallow and also my first 2 White Wagtail of 2011. At least 50 Sand Martin were in the area, 5 LRP and 3 Ringed Plover, 14 Curlew, 2 Redshank and a Snipe, but nothing obviously brought in by the strong SW wind during my visit. Thursday, 27 May 2010. Seaforth NR - 27th May 2010. Earth shattering news broke early afternoon with the stunning discovery of a White tailed Lapwing at Seaforth! I was away when the May 2007 Dumfries and Galloway bird was refound in Lancashire at Leighton Moss, and naturally concluded it would be a once-in-a-lifetime county bird missed. Who would have thought another chance would arise? Almost as rare was the arrival of Doug McAdam, a blast from the past during my manic twitching days in the 1980's.
