A winter vagrant to eastern Canada and northeastern U.S., its nesting range is eastern Greenland, Iceland and Svalbard. Normal winter range is Great Britain, the Netherlands and Denmark. Saturday, February 8, 2014. Curing the Midwinter Birding Doldrums. One of my quests was the federally endangered Red-cockaded Woodpecker, a keystone species of mature longleaf pine forests. Luckily I succeeded in finding at least two by keeping a close watch on a clump of marked nesting trees observable from the road and listening for any vocalizations. NorthernWings: April 2013
http://northernwingsbirder.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html
Sunday, April 7, 2013. For me another sure sign of spring is the first arrival of male Redwing Blackbirds and hearing their guttural, squeaky songs,. In their wake have been the appearance of other early spring migrants such as Turkey Vultures, Common Grackles, American Woodcocks, Tree Swallows, and a variety of waterfowl. With each passing day or two a new spring migrant makes its annual appearance. Its a rite of spring and spiritual renewal after a long winter. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Birding, afte...

NorthernWings: July 2011
http://northernwingsbirder.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html
Saturday, July 2, 2011. The Birdwatcher and the Cormorant. The heading of this post may suggest an Aesop fable communicating a moral message of some sort, and that is not too far from the truth, based on a recent encounter I had with a Double-crested Cormorant. At least once a year I make a birding trip to The Nature Conservancy's LaPlatte River Natural Area. So as a fable is supposed to communicate a message to live by, I see there are at least two, one from the perspective of the cormorant:. To enlarge...

Monday, May 26, 2014. With spring bird migrations in full swing, once again we are enjoying the return of the great diversity of neotropical species that either nest here in northern New England or are passing through on their way to more northern nesting grounds. So what a special surprise when a handsome adult male Northern Wheatear (. Distributed in Alaska and northwestern Canada, and the Greenland race. Breeding in northeastern Canada and Greenland. All six subspecies winter in sub-Saharan Africa.
