October in the Garden – Grey Tabby Gardens

Growing Flowers in Central Florida. October in the Garden. October 29, 2016. It’s so lovely to feel a chill in the air in the early mornings, a sign that our heat and humidity are past and we can look forward to cooler and drier days. Here and there are a few signs of autumn. A few of my orchids which live outside most of the summer under the shade of some trees are starting to flower. This one looks a fitting color with the lichens, silver bark and air plant. Plumbago is just that perfect shade of blue!

Looking Forward – Grey Tabby Gardens

Growing Flowers in Central Florida. January 31, 2016. September 25, 2016. As we were close to a frost twice this week, they suddenly all decided to drop their leaves and the lawn now looks very autumnal! I have really been loving the Hyacinths. Even before they are fully up and open they are so pretty. I heven tucked a few into a few little mercury glasses. Even just one gives of such a powerful fragrance. I have added some silver birch twigs into the pots too because Tulips tend to get a bit floppy....

Splashes of Color – Grey Tabby Gardens
https://greytabbygardens.com/2016/02/20/splashes-of-color
Growing Flowers in Central Florida. February 20, 2016. September 25, 2016. Our rather upside down winter and early spring have contributed to some unexpected color combinations in the garden this week. I’m not sure if I should be embarrassed by them or if I should just enjoy them while they last! Even the cardinals are adding pops of color amongst the flowers. Bees are everywhere enjoying the new flowers…. On the Mystic Spires Salvia…. The container plants…. I enjoyed two big sprays from La Marne rose in...

Growing Flowers in Central Florida. Category: My Cutting Garden. February 27, 2017. Once again there never really was winter in Central Florida this year, which is a blessing in many ways because I don’t have to rush out with frost sheets to cover tender plants but it also means that before we know it the hot and steamy season is upon us. Growing Flowers in Central Florida. Some Garden Inspiration from Sissinghurst Castle. August 13, 2016. A quick trip over to England has allowed me to escape the heat for a while and the noise of construction which is ever present at home while we complete an addition project. I am not over here very long and I am currently writing this from a very cool (or should I say cold? Clematis and Sweet Peas. I believe this is Dahlia Requiem. Sadly I’ve never had any luck with alliums which is annoying becau...

Growing Flowers in Central Florida. Wildflowers and a Spring Beach Walk. March 8, 2016. September 25, 2016. The last couple of weeks in Central Florida have bought blue skies, cool fresh air and warm sunshine. It is a wonderful time of year to be sure! We love to go out to the beach on part of the Cape Canaveral National Seashore to walk and blow the cobwebs away. The last time I took you on a walk out there it was wild and stormy. This weekend it was definitely more typical of Florida! There is certainl...

Seeking Some Shade – Grey Tabby Gardens

Growing Flowers in Central Florida. June 22, 2016. September 25, 2016. Although damaging I still think there is something very beautiful about roses laden with rain drops! Unknown old tea rose. The towering Salvia Amistad that was in this bed got blown sideways and so it has been cut back and is coming up nicely again. Luckily some Salvia Black and Blue is still here much to the delight of the hummingbirds which love this flower. Some small Gardenias are also mixed in here. Plumbago and Foxtail Fern.

Tropical Border – Grey Tabby Gardens

Growing Flowers in Central Florida. May 23, 2016. September 25, 2016. Although I dot tender plants around the garden, most of them end up in a big border which runs along the edge of my back garden. It is the first thing I see as I step out of the study onto the back patio and look over the lawn. It is also the first thing you see as you come around the back from the little courtyard. I love running my hand over these and wondering what they were – a fern maybe or a sea plant? 8230;and yellow Lantana.
