Re-imagining school: what would my wishes be? May 24, 2016. If I had one wish, what would it be? This is a fabulous question to ask, be it to students , teachers or admin. In terms of re-imagining school, one wish however may not be enough. A few staff have got together this lunchtime and we are challenged with the task of responding to Sonya Terborgs blog ‘ Imagine A School’. And pulled out the ideas that resonated with me the most. Make dreamers the norm rather than the dangerous ones among us. 100-wor...

100-word challenge: what does it mean to be a global citizen? June 1, 2016. For me, being a global citizen is not just something that we get to label ourselves due to the fact that we happen to live in a changing, ever-increasingly connected world. It is about being. A particular way, having a particular mindset. It is about responsibility. And the motivation to create a world that is better for all of us, not just driven by individualistic goals. Would I go as far as Oxfam. June 1, 2016 at 12:09 pm.

Learning to belong; the emergence of another me. June 5, 2016. I feel such a sense of elation and personal achievement after having just attended and presented at a graduate conference at the Faculty of Education, University of Cambridge. The theme of the conference was ‘Bridging Theory and Practice in Educational Research’. So what is causing this feeling of excitement? Am I warmed by my sense of belonging? I have not ceased to be me during these two days, but I have lived out. I won’t be with adults an...

What are we preparing students for? | mypractitionervoicedotcom

What are we preparing students for? May 14, 2016. May 24, 2016. Many people searching for a justification of education would agree with the notion that educating young people is in order to prepare them for life beyond school; our young people are learning skills and qualities that help them to function in society at large. Yet what it is exactly that we are preparing them for? How often do we ask ourselves this question? So what does this mean for my context in an international school? Whatever angle on...

https://mypractitionervoice.com/about
I am a full-time teacher in international education, with particular interests in service learning, experiential learning and critical pedagogy. I am also a researcher, studying for a part-time EdD at the University of Durham in the U.K. One reason for choosing to reflect on my experiences in this way is to document my own learning journey, and to allow the practitioner within me to find a voice among those who may just want to listen! “Change-maker guilt”: syndrome of our times? | mypractitionervoicedotcom

8220;Change-maker guilt”: syndrome of our times? May 2, 2016. If I am not travelling halfway across the world to a place much poorer than where I live, am I doing enough for humanity? Am I simply overwhelmed by the sheer vastness of the task of saving the world? Can I ever really know if I am making change? These are questions that are pertinent to me as a high school teacher, as a service learning coordinator, and simply as a human being. How could I learn something useful from others around me? Whateve...

Will curiosity really kill the cat? February 17, 2016. I decided to begin this blog by considering why it is that I am still so interested in learning so much more. Why am I putting myself through a doctorate in education when I am a full-time teacher? Where did I get this desire to keep learning from? Is my love of learning why I ultimately became a teacher and not an actress or an opera singer, as I so often dreamed of becoming? And finally, why does the obsession with grades drive me to despair? You a...

Are outcomes for the powerful? February 19, 2016. Having spent a day working on a set of possible outcomes for service learning experiences, and having participated in a very engaging and webinar on the impacts of service learning on host communities, globalsl.org. I find myself asking the following questions: Are we as educators obsessed by the idea of outcomes? Can learning only happen if it can be measured against a set of outcomes? Does effective learning depend on who sets these outcomes and how?
