Who lived in your house? We are used to well signed streets that have more or less permanent names. It was not always so. The Henley Advertiser. Although census enumerators were asked to record house numbers or names for all census years 1841 onwards, it was only rarely done prior to 1901. In transcribing the census records, the general policy was to enter what was written in the enumerator's book. As a consequence, house numbers are sometimes precede by "No" or "No.". The categorization introduced in 1881 and described by Matthew Woollard. Has been used for all census years 1841 - 1901 with additional classification of the "unoccupied" class.
