Rev Ellacombe’s Chiming Apparatus. The Ellacombe Apparatus was designed by the Rev Ellacombe to allow all the bells to be rung by internal hammers from the ringing cabinet often on the ground floor without the need for Ringers. They allowed tunes to be played on the tower bells and churches could dispense with Bellringers where they did not see eye to eye with them. The Swing of a Bell. In England church bells are rung. By swinging them through nearly a full circle, this gives them their unique tones as the ringing bell is moving backwards and forwards. With the more traditional tower bells this is achieved using a rope attached to a large wheel (about the same size as the bell) connected to the bell. At East Bergholt, the bells are hung in the same way but without a wheel. They are rung by holding onto the blue headstock and pushing. Bell image by Paul Ireland.

Our bells are fitted with Hastings stays. These were invented by former engineer Rev. Edward Hastings Horne in 1892 and used by Taylor’s foundry between 1895 and 1960. It was designed to avoid problems of excess oil from bearings clogging the wooden slider. Our ash stays are fitted with dinglers which run along a fixed iron radius slide bar .
