Sam in Ghana: Impact

http://hesghanaway.blogspot.com/2008/08/impact.html

Thursday, August 21, 2008. At the same time, I recognized the need to try to have impact. Not only is it important to me on a philosophical level, but I think trying to have impact is the only way to really understand why it’s so difficult. Zakeria learned MS office and excel. Zakeria, Ayesha and 'Assembly Man' would often teach each other computer skills. I did a profitability study of NERICA rice. So did I have the ever elusive impact? My host family was incredible to me during my stay in Ghana. I'm a ...

Sam in Ghana: May 2008

http://hesghanaway.blogspot.com/2008_05_01_archive.html

Thursday, May 29, 2008. Just some of my compound's residents. Adisa is in black, behind the pot. Arysha is in yellow, behind her. Sala is in the redish dress in the front row. Arysha has never been more than 10km from her home in Tolon. Arysha is a reminder of what is possible. People say “sweet” when something tastes good. This caused some confusion at first since people would offer me food and ask “is it sweet? 8221;, to which I would cautiously reply, “not really, is it supposed to be? Time is another...

http://hesghanaway.blogspot.com/2008_04_01_archive.html

Sunday, April 27, 2008. Because All Good Stories Need An Introduction. This is the first of what I hope to be many posts over the course of this summer. For those who don't know, I'll be spending three and a half months in Ghana as a Junior Fellow volunteer with Engineers Without Borders Canada. The following is a short description of what I'm doing and why I'm doing it. What is Engineers Without Borders Canada? And on the untying of Canada’s existing foreign aid. Where Am I Going and What Am I Doing?

Sam in Ghana: The Village of Kukuo

http://hesghanaway.blogspot.com/2008/07/village-of-kukuo.html

Thursday, July 31, 2008. The Village of Kukuo. There is absolutely no coco grown in the village of Kukuo, nor is there in most of Northern Ghana. There are however, some of the nicest people anyone anywhere could hope to meet and I had the privilege of doing just that this past week. The village of Kukuo at sunset. 1 Gain a better understanding of rural livelihoods and poverty in Ghana. 2 Learn more about the farmer members of the NILRIFACU rice cooperative and the services NILRIFACU provides. The family...

Andrea's summer in Ghana: a letter to one of my entrepreneurs

http://andreagoestoghana.blogspot.com/2008/08/letter-to-one-of-my-entrepreneurs.html

Andrea's summer in Ghana. The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes. Thursday, August 7, 2008. A letter to one of my entrepreneurs. Dear Bro’George,. I had such a fun day helping you with Excel! The day I can type as fast as you I will kill two fowls”. But the truth is, I have so much to learn from you. Your hardwork, entrepreneurship, charisma and vision are all such great characteristics that I would kill three. I will try to rest. Blogs of other JFs.

Vera in Zambia: The Sustainable Good Life

http://verainzambia.blogspot.com/2008/07/sustainable-good-life.html

Wednesday, July 16, 2008. The Sustainable Good Life. 8220;If you have an expensive mortgage and a family to support then theoretical objections to the environmentally damaging commute to work or of the triviality of your job can quietly evaporate. Desperate people from all levels of wealth are hungry for better alternatives.”. How many people want more vacation time? How many people feel they lack material comforts compared to their neighbors? The point is that many people in the rich world are facing si...

Courtney in Gushei, Ghana. A four month volunteer placement through Engineers Without Borders Canada, McGill University chapter. Thursday, July 17, 2008. I bought a ball in Tamale and brought it out to the field one day. It is a nice thing to look forward to at the end of the day. I don’t think it is actua...

I just finished my first full week of work and I am back in Tamale to stock up on some supplies, use the internet, and catch up with some other volunteers. Courtney in Gushei, Ghana. A four month volunteer placement through Engineers Without Borders Canada, McGill University chapter. Thursday, August 28, 2008. Wrapping up at Work. There was so much I wanted to do in my last few weeks at work, and the time seemed to fly by. In an earlier post, I discussed how I wanted to hold a farmers’ meeting on drip irrigation, and I managed to pull it off before leaving ITFC. Just to refresh your memory, there were 2 reasons I organized this meeting:. Sarah - long term v...

http://g-in-ghana.blogspot.com/2008/07/july-17th-blog-post.html

Monday, July 21, 2008. July 17th Blog Post. Well looking at the calendar today I realized to my surprise that I have only 31 days left here in Salaga. Almost exactly one month - though I think I will be much closer to that by the time I am able to post this! Next week I am heading out to the Makango area, part of our District, to spend some time in a village. I am planning on spending five days with a local family to experience the realities of rural life in Ghana - yes, mud hut and all! I am all ears!
