Diary of a hilltop garden
July | 2015 | hillwards
https://hillwards.wordpress.com/2015/07
Diary of a hilltop garden. Posted in July 2015. Regular visitors to this blog may have noticed that I am particularly fond of purple flowers, and also rather a fan of salvias. In the third year since our purchase at the Malvern Spring Show, Dierama ‘Merlin’ has really found its stride this year. There’s no denying that our terrace could do with weeding: however, the occasional interloper like this one makes me smile. With this year’s blackcurrant crop, we decided to try making a cordial. Diary of a hilltop garden. This entry was posted on July 23, 2015, in Flowers. And tagged angels fishing rods. In the third year since our purchase at the Malvern Spring Show, Dierama ‘Merlin’ has really found its stride this year. With no fewer than eight long stems, elegantly arching beneath the weight of pendulous purple bells, this plant is really packing a punch in the garden this year – and I am, as ever, entirely under its spell. Merlin, magician indeed! 6 thoughts on “ Merlin. Our soil is also he...

Diary of a hilltop garden. Of Doubles And Dawn. This entry was posted on May 31, 2015, in Flowers. At this time of year every day brings something new to discover in the garden – and this year I’m seeing our garden at hours of the day that I have fervently shunned in the past in favour of a warm bed…. I’m definitely not a crack-of-dawn girl by nature, but on a sunny May morning I can certainly see the appeal of this time of day, when the play of light and shadows in the garden is rather magical. The lemo...

Diary of a hilltop garden. This entry was posted on June 6, 2015, in Out And About. I find myself fascinated by lighthouses. Perhaps it’s their physical presence; the quiet strength and simple clean lines that pleases me most. Or perhaps it’s their rugged windswept locations, or even some romantic sense of their history…. Protecting seafarers, with such elegance and style. 4 thoughts on “ To The Lighthouse. June 6, 2015 at 9:54 pm. June 6, 2015 at 9:55 pm. June 7, 2015 at 8:03 am. June 7, 2015 at 9:12 am.
Just-spring* | hillwards
https://hillwards.wordpress.com/2013/02/18/just-spring
Diary of a hilltop garden. This entry was posted on February 18, 2013, in Harvest. The ground is not quite as saturated as it has been; though the grass paths in the kitchen garden still squelch under foot, and there is more mud than grass where foot traffic is heaviest alongside the wood store. The main lawn seems remarkably unscathed so far despite our toing-and-froing, though definitely in need of a cut as soon as it is dry enough. In Just- spring when the world is mud- luscious. It is always interest...

Galanthus: First snowdrop of the year, and one summer visitor
http://mygalanthusgarden.blogspot.com/2016/12/first-snowdrop-of-year-and-one-summer.html
Then snowdrops and my heart I’ll bring" (Christina Rossetti). Saturday, 24 December 2016. First snowdrop of the year, and one summer visitor. 24 December 2016 at 21:01. Its quite remarkable to have a snowdrop and a Rudbeckia blooming at the same time I expect, but they both lend an appropriate measure of cheer to the holiday garden. Happy Christmas, Ian! On shrubs and going a bit mad | Beangenie
https://beangenie.wordpress.com/2015/05/19/on-shrubs-and-going-a-bit-mad
An optimist's garden in Wales. On shrubs and going a bit mad. Sometimes you suddenly get a bit between your teeth and do something radical. I think whatever it is has actually been brewing away subconsciously, and then something happens to pull it into the foreground and there you are – with an inspiration which seems to have come out of nowhere. You could apply this theory to great works of art and literature. I’m applying it to the big bed in the bottom garden. I’d already done the detour so I de...

Ipheion uniflorum 'Wisley Blue' is the first of the ipheions to flower this year. It has been awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit though it is more a pale lilac-purple than blue. Galanthus: Galanthus "Three Ships", Hellebore "Christmas Carol" and a Christmas morning surprise

Then snowdrops and my heart I’ll bring" (Christina Rossetti). Sunday, 25 December 2016. Galanthus "Three Ships", Hellebore "Christmas Carol" and a Christmas morning surprise. I hope you are enjoying a splendid Christmas Day. The weather forecaster as I type speaks of the potential for beating a record dating back almost 100 years with temperatures possibly beating the 15.6C of Killerton in Devon in 1920. Galanthus: Galanthus nivalis Sandersii
http://mygalanthusgarden.blogspot.com/2016/03/galanthus-nivalis-sandersii.html
Then snowdrops and my heart I’ll bring" (Christina Rossetti). Tuesday, 15 March 2016. Still beautiful on my display bench, Galanthus nivalis Sandersii is quite a sight and a rival for many over-priced yellow snowdrops I could mention on eBay at the moment. Not all versions with this name are as yellow. In the background is Eranthis hyemalis 'Guinea Gold', a deeper version of the winter aconite and one I have had for years but one that refuses to increase. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Nevertheless, in late July on my regular Tuesday visit, I took some snaps and thought I’d give you a short – if incomplete – tour of the second garden I tend. Lidt havehistorie og Kjeld Slot. Tirsdag den 26. maj 2015. Haven er bare så frodig og skøn lige nu! Jeg vil vise lidt billeder fra bl. a. haven og engen. Overvintrende voksurt - er det ikke fantastisk, og så lige i år, hvor jeg ikke har sået nogen sommerblomster! Udsnit af engen (som vi såede sidste juni) med jordkulen. Engen med prærieliljer og pinseliljer, som jeg lagde i efteråret. Søjlepoplerne vokser lystigt i deres rør. Tirsdag, maj 26, 2015. Mandag den 18. maj 2015. Alting grønnes og springer ud.

Hill Wanderings - Walking in the Lakes
Hill Wanderings - Walking in the Lakes. Thursday, 5 February 2015. Great Crag, 4 Deer Fences, 3 Tarns, 2 Synges and 1 Failed Shortcut. Its always when the distance back home is more than the distance to the hill when you realise that you've forgotten something! Today it was when I pulled into Kettlewell car park to take a quick shot of Derwentwater - fortunately I keep a little point and click in the glove box so all was not lost, just a shame it had a bit of dirt on the mens!
