The Historical Dilettante: May 2013
http://www.historicaldilettante.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html
Sunday, May 26, 2013. Fake Out: Original Reproductions. One thing leads to another on the Internet. That's as much as I'm going to say about how I found myself looking at an online catalogue of celebrity impersonators the other day. I must admit that given a choice, watching a celebrity impersonator performance isn't high on my list. Except when fake becomes real. Some observers of the insular world of art appreciation, such as Forged. Author Jonathon Keats, assert that it is the f. Who assumed various i...

Thursday, May 28, 2015. Forgotten History: quiet, pleasant and self-possessed Sarah Jane Negley Mellon. If you're from Pittsburgh, you know the name Mellon. The name seeped into my consciousness at an astonishingly early age. I vividly recall being 5 years old and placing my chin on a walnut handrail after clambering up a marble step to peer into display cases at the Carnegie Museum. Scaife miniature dioramas, Carnegie Museum of Art. Scaife miniature dioramas, Carnegie Museum of Art. And of course I coul...

Wednesday, June 5, 2013. Invasion of the Species. Last summer I piled my family in the car and we took off on the trail of George Washington in Western Pennsylvania. We had colored and mounted a drawing of George Washington on a stick so we could bring him along for photo ops and. Suggested rural scenic routes along the signposted Washington's Trail that are thought to more closely parallel the route Washington took in fall 1753. You can view a map of the Washington Trail at this LINK. Once our 8 year ol...

In the Footsteps of Eleanor of Aquitaine: Fontevraud Abbaye
http://eleanorfootsteps.blogspot.com/2012/10/fontevraud-abbaye.html
In the Footsteps of Eleanor of Aquitaine. Historical tour of northern France with author Sharon Kay Penman. June 3-13, 2011. Thursday, October 25, 2012. Thursday, June 9, 2011. We had free time that evening to explore Fontevraud. We'd all made advance arrangements through our fabulous tour manager for dinner so as to avoid last night's mealtime fiascos. After all, it wasn't like we could cook up a meal in the abbey kitchen for ourselves. It's a little, uhm, rustic. The kitchen was restored in the early 2...

In the Footsteps of Eleanor of Aquitaine. Historical tour of northern France with author Sharon Kay Penman. June 3-13, 2011. Monday, July 9, 2012. Tuesday, 7 June, 2011. Our drive from Falaise to Mont St-Michel was long. The delay leaving Paris earlier in the day caused a few of us to fret about possibly not having time to enjoy the town before the sidewalks rolled up. We didn't care if the shops sold tourist trinkets; we just wanted to be there. Photo by Nicole Benkert. According to legend, in 709 the A...

Friday, June 10, 2011. Having lost my boutique innocence in Chinon, I cheerily boarded the bus. I was basking in a splash of sun like a well-contented cat when it was announced that we had more Plantagenet exploring to do. Off the bus, then, and out for a walk along some troglodyte dwellings high above the city. You c...

In the Footsteps of Eleanor of Aquitaine. Historical tour of northern France with author Sharon Kay Penman. June 3-13, 2011. Thursday, March 14, 2013. Saturday, June 11, 2011. We were originally meant to stay overnight in Angers but in order to cut travel time on our last day we were directed to the city of Orléans. We passed this unique and complex Europe Bridge spanning the Loire on the western edge of Orléans. Designed by architect Santiago Calatrava, the bridge opened in 2000 to much positive acclaim.

Musings and reportage on Spinsta Life and the projects that get us through. Tuesday, June 24, 2014. Rule Britannia: A Union Jack Tea Cozy. I have been a little obsessed with the use of the British flag as a design element for a while now. I even have a Pinterest board. Dedicated to all the ways you can apply it to furnishings, clothing, tea sets etc. I am particularly fond of the ways other color schemes are substituted for the official red, white and blue. Can you identify these London scenes? So here i...

Musings and reportage on Spinsta Life and the projects that get us through. Thursday, October 27, 2011. Why Aren't You Married? Obviously, these people are not deviants. After years and years of hearing this question and trying to find an answer that would make sense to the questioner without going into a big essay on the socio-cultural and personal influences on my marital status, I think I have finally generated a good answer to this question:. Why are you married? I even know of a couple who met when ...

The depiction Ball chose would have been familiar to many at the time. That doesn’t make it a good choice.
