What We Watched On Television. In Shades of Black and White. In 1947, RCA produced 170,000 black and white tv sets for mass consumption (with the population of the United States coming in a little over 144,000,000 people, not even one percent of us even owned a television set in 1947! Considering the fact that Channel 6 (WFBM-TV, now known as WRTV) was the first station to sign on and broadcast over our local airwaves on May 30, 1949, I expect that none of those 1947 RCA sets were sold in Columbus Indiana.
