For hundreds of years, over 80% of the American population lived in semi-isolation on small family farms scattered throughout the countryside. Award-winning Hancock's Resolution is one of the very few of those farms still remaining. Due to its authenticity and simplicity it is considered a "National Treasure". It is a small house with a huge story to tell because of its five historic themes.

The town was named after James Madison Handley who was a Confederate Major in the Civil War. He owned a very large plantation to the east of this town. Handley. Mrs. Miriam Hudson had been interviewing longtime local citizens for oral history tapes in conjunction with the library. Ed Milton had been visiting longtime Hapeville residents looking for pictures and information that related to local early history. Within two years of its formation, the Society boasted of a membership of over 300 and35 corporate members.
