Through the 1950s, the Trail Smoke Eaters gained momentum with a strong nucleus of local talent and won the Savage Cup for the fifteenth time in 1960, then hosted the Allan cup finals against the Chatham Maroons of Ontario, with Chatham defeating Trail 4 games to 1. Chatham, as the Allan Cup championship team, was to represent Canada at the 1961 World Hockey Championships held in Lausanne and Geneva, Switzerland. In the late part of the 19th Century, hockey was becoming a national pastime and miners and smelter workers in the West Kootenay region of British Columbia were quick to organize casual games among neighbouring communities, including Trail. Hockey in Trail became more formally managed with the construction of the Fruit Fair Building on Bay Avenue in 1911. Trail’s Fruit Fair Building, constructed in 1912. Things you may not know about the Trail Smoke Eaters! The Trail Smoke Eaters were formed in 1926 and called the Trail Senior Hockey Club. In their first year of operation, they won the Savage Cup, BC’s Senior Hockey Championship. They went on to win seven Savage cups in a row, before losing to the Kimberley Dynamiters in 1934.
