Holyrood Church | Historic Southampton
https://historicsouthampton.wordpress.com/2016/07/31/holyrood-church
July 31, 2016. On the night of the 30th of November 1940, Southampton felt the full force of the Nazi war machine, as the Luftwaffe dropped 800 high explosive bombs and 9000 incendiary bombs on the town centre. Holyrood Church, which stood on the corner where Bernard Street met the High Street, was one of approximately 500 buildings completely destroyed that night, a night in which 214 Southampton residents lost their lives. Holyrood Church before the Second World War…. All of that history was then basic...

July 24, 2016. Simnel Street today is a part-pedestrianised lane of modern red brick houses dotted with bits of medieval wall. Tucked away from busier parts of Southampton, its modern day quietness belies its tumultuous past. Simnel Street is up there with Southampton’s oldest streets. Simnel Street however played its part in pushing forward the slum clearances&#...

South Western House | Historic Southampton
https://historicsouthampton.wordpress.com/2016/08/21/south-western-house
August 21, 2016. South Western House has been an unmistakable Southampton landmark since it opened as a grand hotel in 1897. At this time, it was called the Imperial Hotel, but the original developer quickly went bankrupt and so the London and South Western Railway purchased the property and applied the finishing touches, before changing its name to the South Western Hotel. After the War, the hotel did not reopen. From 1961 until 1991 the building was owned by the BBC, who used it to broadcast their ...

November 10, 2016. November the 11th 2016 will mark 98 years since the guns fell silent on the Western Front. At the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month, people will bow their heads and remember the sacrifice of those who, for our tomorrow, gave their today.
