During my visit to UK (on 07th July 2002) I managed finally to get to see Mike Heseltine and he very kindly provided me with the Heseltine History of Scorton Grammar School which he compiled in the 60s from various sources. I have made amendments to some areas of the original draft, predominantly for context, but I do intend also to add the history from the 1960s up to the closure in the 1990s. Though the Examiners continued to give such favourable reports of the school, a passing comment in a Directory published in 1890 that the school was Once a place of some repute as an educational establishment' gives rise to some doubt about the reliability of the persistently flattering words of Examiners. For a century after the death of the Revd. John Noble, there is very little information available on life at Scorton. He was succeeded as Headmaster by the revd Edward Holmes who in turn was followed in 1799 by William Bowe, who stayed until 1837. He was also curate of catterick in charge of Bolton on Swale church from 1791 until 1812. In 1835, the school weathercock was erected at a cost of £2-15-6d. Though the Governors continued to keep as much control as possible during the war, there was little they could do to prevent a considerable amount of decay setting in. As a school, Scorton ceased to function, and as a depot if war it became derelict. In the field at the back of the school was a hostel for agricultural workers, suitably camouflaged to avoid discovery from the air. Later this was to be of great use to the school.

After the war it decided to re open the school (after considerable and persistent campaigning by the Rev. Crankshaw) as an independent grammar school and after considerable thought discussion and preparation the school formally reopened at 9 0 am on ,January 17th , 1949.at this time there were thirty two day boys and thirteen boarders. The matter was not settled there. In 1912, it was decided by the Governors to carry out alterations to the school buildings at an estimated cost of £2,500 to give a secondary education to both boys and girls of the district.
