Tuesday, January 29, 2013. More About the Hunley. 8230;”For nearly 150 years, the story of the. Has been Civil War legend. And it has been wrong.”. Well, correcting myths, legends and poor history has been habit around here, so let’s dive in. In this case it isn’t so much intentionally reporting incorrect history or revising history to make it more interesting –it’s just that we didn’t have all the pieces of the puzzle. Was much closer to the blast –within 20 feet. You can read the whole thing. I’v...

History Is Elementary: August 2013

http://historyiselementary.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html

Friday, August 23, 2013. Using Memoirs to Strengthen Curriculum. In my opinion the least taught war in United States classrooms has to be the Korean War. I feel that events in Korea during the 1950s have a real place in the classroom, but ignorance keeps it from being fully explored in the curriculum. It was done that way when I was in school, and in most classrooms it’s still treated that way. I don’t blame teachers for not diving deep into the war. In the case of Korea I had a memoir fall into my lap t...

Thinking about teaching and learning. Tuesday, June 16, 2015. 10 Great Quotes from "Building A Better Teacher" by Elizabeth Green. 3 choosing 13-9 as the perfect subtraction problem because it forces the learner to use one of two methods; either the subtraction subtraction method or the subtraction addition method. 9 If teaching really was the most important of all the educational interventions, then the only logical conclusion was that American educators ought to build a coherent infrastructure - clear ...

Mike Shirley: Stories

http://dinner-table-stories.blogspot.com/2013/06/stories-really-good-stories.html

Wednesday, June 19, 2013. Stories, really good stories. I love stories. Stories from my childhood, stories from my kids growing up, stories from the past of all kinds. But really good stories are not the ones I write down. They don't get repeated to friends. The really good stories are the ones I tell myself. I tell myself these in the dark of night when my brain can't quite stop enough for sleep to surface. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. There was an error in this gadget.

Thinking about teaching and learning. Wednesday, April 08, 2015. Weniger, aber besser (Less But Better). Do you ever sit down with a stack of tasks to accomplish and can't decide where to start? Do you quickly agree to take on another task when you know your calendar is already bloated? Are you floating from one commitment to the next without finishing anything to satisfaction? Then, Greg McKeown has written a book that could be a lifeline. Essentialism. What do I feel deeply inspired by? This book has m...

Mike Shirley: The Little Brown Headed Girl

http://dinner-table-stories.blogspot.com/2012/07/The-Little-Brown-Headed-Girl.html

Tuesday, July 24, 2012. The Little Brown Headed Girl. My first school was a small elementary school in Lithia Springs named Annette Winn Elementary, and my first grade teacher was a battle ax of a woman named Mrs. Harris. Why was she a battle ax? Mrs Harris, you see, firmly believed in corporal punishment. Her complete logic was that corporal punishment was in the bible, and if it was in the bible you either accepted it, or you needed more of it. She sat down right beside me! What to say, what to say!
