1709年，他以撥弦古鋼琴為原形，製作出一架被稱為具有 強弱音變化的古鋼琴 他在鋼琴上採用了以弦槌擊弦發音的機械裝置，代替了過去撥弦古鋼琴用動物 羽管波動琴弦發音的機械裝置。 1709年後，克里斯托福里又進一步改革了原來擊弦機的結構，他在這部機械中安裝了一種與現代擊弦機的複震槓桿系統近乎完全一致的起動槓桿，使擊弦速度比 原來加快了10倍，而且可以快速連續彈奏 音域也增加為4組 可以說這就是現代鋼琴的雛形。 西爾伯曼的名徒被稱為 十二弟子 ，他們分別製造出兩種不同風格的鋼琴，即 維也納式擊弦機鋼琴 和 英國式擊弦機鋼琴。 到18世紀 後期，鋼琴到19世紀鋼琴已登上 樂器之王 的寶座。 現代鋼琴主要有兩種形式 一為直立式鋼琴(upright piano)，一為三角平台式(grand piano)。 自動鋼琴最初形式 出現在19世紀末 是在普通鋼琴前加用一部可移動的 演奏器 player ，外形極似一架小型足踏簧風琴，有一排65- 88個 木手指 置於普通鋼琴鍵盤上方。 演奏器用打孔紙捲 打孔位置與鋼琴譜相符 操縱 用足踏風箱鼓風，風通過紙捲緩緩轉動的紙捲上的孔位，驅動機械連 動相應的 木手指 擊琴鍵奏出音樂。
