Every other year, usually for three nights over the May Bank Holiday weekend, a group of 50 or more people of all ages from Horsted Keynes visits Cahagnes to stay with French hosts. On alternate years, our friends from Cahagnes visit us. The specific dates for the visit are usually agreed in the autumn. How does the twinning work? What happens on the visits? The Spring Bank Holiday Friday saw 21 people from Horsted Keynes set off at the crack of dawn to make the biennial visit to our twinning village of Cahagnes in Normandy. Following the ferry crossing, we had a short coach ride from the port near Caen direct to their village hall and a reception organised by the hosts. The History of Twinning. In 1966, Madame le Boucher, a long-time student of Norman history, came to Hastings with her son for the900thcentenary celebrations. They were taken to Horsted Keynes by General and Lady Marshall-Cornwall, whose son is buried at Cahagnes, and shown round the church by the Rector. Return to top of page.

The History between Horsted Keynes and Cahagnes
Horsted Keynes is twinned with Cahagnes, a rural village in Normandy situated between Caen and Bayeux. A truly historic twinning dating back to the Norman invasion of 1066. William the Conqueror gifted the parish to his knight Guillaume de Cahaignes. From here Horsted Keynes got its name; Horsted a Saxon name meaning a resting place for horses , and Keynes – a derivative of Cahaignes, now known as Cahagnes.
