Homegrown Locals

Tuesday, November 12, 2013. One year and eight months have passed since my last post. That last post was left sitting like a sentry on the front lines of the edge. There was always a need to take one last stroke. So, here we are, almost two years later, and I am returning briefly to put a final stamp on this collection of tales that are largely representative of my own personal myth, my own call to adventure. Cheers to all of it, and one last ride on the magic bus. We live in unromantic times. We might i...

Homegrown Locals: Day 31 - Kingston

http://homegrownlocals.blogspot.com/2011/08/day-31-kingston.html

Wednesday, August 10, 2011. Day 31 - Kingston. It was a rainy day. Kerry and I boated over to Wolfe Island, borrowed Rebecca's car and drove to Marysville to take the ferry over to Kingston. We ate lunch at Panchanco, one of Kerry's favorite restaurants. I picked unwisely and had a less than appetizing tostada with scallop ceviche, probably not the thing to order in a restaurant specializing in the local organic. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Homegrown Locals: February 2011

http://homegrownlocals.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html

Sunday, February 27, 2011. Just back from a long weekend of non-stop adventure. Stories to come. for now, here's a short film of our exploratory run on Pringle Run near Albright, West Virginia. Friday, February 25, 2011. The phone rang. I rolled over. The phone rang again. My arm reached toward the night stand and fumbled for the phone. I pressed the 'accept' button. 'Hello'. It was Curt. I fell asleep at nine o'clock the night before. 'I'm on my way dude'. Three hours later we were approaching Seneca Ro...

Homegrown Locals: The Drive

http://homegrownlocals.blogspot.com/2011/08/drive.html

Wednesday, August 17, 2011. Kerry and I lived at the River for thirty one straight days this summer. On the morning of the thirty-second day I was off in a flurry with Nathan Sass and Jordan Poffenberger, headed to the wilds of Canada. One chapter ends and another begins. It took one hour to reach the take-out point. We dropped Jordan's car, loaded he and Nathan's boats on the Jeep and hung a few pieces of kayak gear from trees on the banks of the river so we knew where to take out. Once things were sett...

Homegrown Locals: April 2012

http://homegrownlocals.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html

Sunday, April 1, 2012. It took an hour to get to the base of Maderas, a greener, sleepier, less lofty version of it´s siter, Concepcion. The brother and sister hopped out at 'hosepedaje del sol'. We made a vague plan to hike Maderas the next day, but as I had no real clue as to where I was headed, this never materialized. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Homegrown Locals: September 2010

http://homegrownlocals.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html

Monday, September 20, 2010. I made my return to the Gauley River. We decide to go to the river. We make a conscious choice to seek it out, to learn from it, to experience it. We paddled fifty two miles on Saturday. It is known as the double-marathon, a logistical, mental, and physical challenge. It was a long way to paddle. It was a series of small moments strung together over nine hours of river time. Almost all of it, I do not remember. There are reasons we go to the river. Tuesday, September 7, 2010.

Homegrown Loudoun

Wednesday, December 1, 2010. Two hours, two museums. 741 miller drive SE, suite G-2. Leesburg, VA 20175. A (small) taste of the Smithsonian without the hassle of venturing into DC. Helpful, enthusiastic volunteers, many with backgrounds in geology (talk to Helene if you can). Small children's area in the front with puzzles, games, stuffed animals and hands-on learning activities. Great for those who want to draw still-life portraits of the specimens, which are surprisingly allowed to be handled. Museum p...
