The Homestead Laboratory: Cherry Pitter Hack for Nanking Cherries

http://homesteadlaboratory.blogspot.com/2016/06/cherry-pitter-hack-for-nanking-cherries.html

Tuesday, June 28, 2016. Cherry Pitter Hack for Nanking Cherries. It's generally accepted among scientists that Nanking cherries evolved to be smaller than regular cherries so that standard-size cherry pitters wouldn't work on them, which would cause humans to be less likely to collect them, and as a result, Nanking cherry seeds would be spread further and wider by birds and squirrels. (Don't bother looking that up, that conclusion was extrapolated from a poll of household scientists.). Cherry Pitter Hack...

The Homestead Laboratory: February 2016

http://homesteadlaboratory.blogspot.com/2016_02_01_archive.html

Monday, February 29, 2016. Eggshell (Calcium Carbonate) Leavening, Part 2. Boiling ground-up eggshells in lye to dissolve away the protein. (It didn't work very well, but at least the biscuits were tasty.) Today, we take a look at the other option- dissolving the calcium carbonate and regenerating it. The first thought we had was that the CaCO. In the eggshells can be dissolved by the acetic acid in vinegar to make calcium acetate (Ca(Ac). Which can be decomposed to CaCO. Around 400 °C. Way back when thi...

The Homestead Laboratory: Homestead Happiness, June Week 1

http://homesteadlaboratory.blogspot.com/2015/06/homestead-happiness-june-week-1.html

Sunday, June 7, 2015. Homestead Happiness, June Week 1. Summer is really kickin' into gear around here, and although the spring was a struggle for garden prep and pollinators, there's some good news from the Lab on both fronts this week. Our wildflowers (Erysimum, Wallflowers) from a few weeks ago were joined in bloom by some feral roses this week. We haven't seen many bees on either of those, but the wallflowers are being worked by some hover flies. We think this specimen is Eristalis arbustorum. Holida...

The Homestead Laboratory: Turbo-Braised Campfire Chicken

http://homesteadlaboratory.blogspot.com/2016/05/turbo-braised-campfire-chicken.html

Monday, May 23, 2016. Back in November, we noted. The serendipitous discovery that the bottom grate of a smokey joe grill fits perfectly in the bottom of our 8-quart cast iron dutch oven. The stones are a low-thermal-conductivity support to keep the grate off the bottom of the pan and hopefully prevent roasting chickens from burning. Also, they allow you to call your food products stone soup! What's your favorite way to cook a whole chicken outside? Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Righteous Anger Abo...

The Homestead Laboratory: Wood Ash Leavening--Biscuit Baking Time!

http://homesteadlaboratory.blogspot.com/2016/03/wood-ash-leavening-biscuit-baking-time.html

Monday, March 14, 2016. Wood Ash Leavening- Biscuit Baking Time! Last Tuesday, we hypothesized. Based on historical tales, that wood ash leachate ("ash water") likely contains both potassium hydroxide and potassium carbonate. On Saturday, we proved it with a titration experiment. Today, we find out what it all means with a biscuit baking party. This is the recipe that we used as a starting point (and a positive control):. 05 cups all-purpose flour. 0125 (1/8) tsp salt. 025 (1/4) tsp baking soda. To modif...

This is your pasture on chickens. | Green Machine Farm

http://greenmachinefarm.com/this-is-your-pasture-on-chickens

Farming Like the Future Depends On It. Downtown St. Paul. This is your pasture on chickens. Meat chickens aren’t exactly the most fun animals to raise. Sure, they’re easy and fast, but they’re pretty gross critters, especially the cornish cross. Add to that the fact that we don’t make much money off of the chickens and they’d seem like something we’d get rid of. The other day I decided that I’d keep the chickens around even if they didn’t make us any money. Why? See a bit of difference? And then you&#821...

Farming Like the Future Depends On It. Downtown St. Paul. Cheap Chicken Nipple Waterers. OK, I’ll admit it, I’m pretty cheap sometimes. It comes in handy when you’ve chosen an extremely lucrative profession like farming. But sometimes frugality leads me astray. The first iterations of our chicken waterers were built with some very nice poultry nipple waterers. I thought they’d be a step-up because they can be disassembled for cleaning. Turkeys: take two | Green Machine Farm

http://greenmachinefarm.com/turkeys-take-two

Farming Like the Future Depends On It. Downtown St. Paul. Earlier this month, against our better judgement we got a few turkeys. We’ve been (understandably) gun-shy about getting more turkeys after our big disaster. With them the first time. But we sure didn’t like having to go buy a turkey for Thanksgiving last year either. So turkeys it is. Turkeys, Chicks, and Babies, Oh My! Thanks for the Turkey. Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window). Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window). Click ...

Tuesday, August 17, 2010. Yesterday I received notice in the mail that my dishwasher had been recalled. Bummer! I was instructed to call a technician for a free repair, and not to use the dishwasher in the mean time, due to fire hazard. Well, there is no time like the present for the kids to learn how to do this job by hand. They have lived their entire lives in a home where machine washing was the way to acomplish this housekeeping task. Links to this post. Tuesday, March 09, 2010. Links to this post.
