根據我國 特殊教育法 的規定，資優的類別包括 一般智能優異 、 學術性向優異 、 藝術才能優異 、 領導能力優異 、 創造能力優異 及 其他特殊才能優異 六大類. 從前述類別來看， 資優 並不僅限於認知能力的範疇而已 即便是同為學術性向優異者，有些人的數學表現優異，有些人在語文方面表現傑出，有人對社會科學有濃厚的興趣，有的人則擅長於自然現象的觀察、演繹、歸納，都不相同。 絕大多數的資優生屬於偏才型 在單一學科或單一領域有傑出的表現 ，極少數的人是全才型 在各領域皆表現傑出。 依據新版 特殊教育法 辦理，除擴大服務對象以符合多元智能概念發展外，其他鑑定標準在客觀化測驗部分，由平均數以上2個標準差降低至平均數以上1.5個標準差，並側重教師的觀察與推薦，以彌補客觀化測驗的不足。 台中市於民國89年訂定 臺中市特殊教育學生鑑定及就學輔導委員會設置要點 ，並依該要點設置 特殊教育學生鑑定及就學輔導委員會 ，下設 資賦優異學生鑑定及就學輔導小組 協助資優學生之鑑定與安置工作。 2 藝術才能 音樂、美術、舞蹈 及其他特殊才能 體育. 面審核 初選 團體智力、性向及成就測驗等 複選 個別智力測驗、實作評量等 主辦學校鑑.
