beer – Hotdish & Catfish
http://hotdishcatfish.com/tag/beer
Life in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. A Toast to Beer and Hoppiness. April 5, 2012. April 5, 2012. We all have that friend, the one who obsesses over microbrews as much as a hipster obsesses over obscure indie rock bands. And while I tune out most of their rants about why barleywine should be savored or why Bud Light doesn’t count, I do enjoy their vast knowledge on all things beer. I especially turn to these connoisseurs while enjoying a burger on a pub’s patio. Wild Blue, 8% Alc. Blue Dawg Brewing,. That t...
alabama – Hotdish & Catfish
http://hotdishcatfish.com/tag/alabama-2
Life in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. So Long, Sweet Home Alabama. May 3, 2012. May 3, 2012. I’m a firm believer in finding the good in every situation. And while I’ve suffered bouts of homesickness down here, I’ve come to love a lot about my southern home. I actually do love the weather. While mid-day in the spring and summer can be unbearable, the nights are perfection. And I have to say – the winters down here are pretty nice compared to the bitterly cold tundra up north. I love the southernisms. Not only...

An Open Letter To Future Minnesotans – Hotdish & Catfish
http://hotdishcatfish.com/2014/05/16/an-open-letter-to-future-minnesotans
Life in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. An Open Letter To Future Minnesotans. May 16, 2014. January 11, 2015. This week, Lauren and I are excited to feature a new guest writer on Hotdish and Catfish: Jay Higgins. Recently, Jay penned a letter to some friends who are looking for a fresh place to call home. We chose to include this on the blog because Jay’s passion for Minnesota embodies so much of what Lauren and I love about living in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. Enjoy! So, why did I tell you that story? Sure But...
The Tribe Has Spoken – Hotdish & Catfish

Life in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. The Tribe Has Spoken. November 1, 2013. January 19, 2015. We are hitting the time of year when it becomes imperative to bundle up and stay indoors. Soon snow flurries will give way to full-blown arctic weather, and we’ll buckle down for the coming months. Minneapolis is a great place for many reasons, one of which is its mole-like skyway system. Constant protection from the elements! This week, I ventured to the Guthrie Theater for the first time (I know! This summary al...

Little Farmhouse in the Big City: harvest at the farmhouse
http://littlefarmhouseinthebigcity.blogspot.com/2013/09/harvest-at-farmhouse.html
Little Farmhouse in the Big City. Friday, September 27, 2013. Harvest at the farmhouse. It's been both a great season in the garden and a meh season. From a late start planting to another drought, my grass and trees are struggling while my squirrels get the best tomatoes! But this summer's growing experience did convince me it's time to cut down a few trees in the back to allow more sunlight in the garden. And my lawn has looked great most of the summer thanks to the fancy new mower/mulcher! LFITBC is a ...

Little Farmhouse in the Big City: June 2013
http://littlefarmhouseinthebigcity.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html
Little Farmhouse in the Big City. Wednesday, June 26, 2013. Words cannot really describe what my street, neighborhood, entire city look like after a devastating storm last Friday night. So here are some numbers and photos instead. 130-year-old (someone counted the rings! Elm tree, which hit 2 cars on its way down. Just one of three trees on our block to fall all the way across the road. Over 600,000 Minnesotans without power (some still don't have service back). Luckily, I also had:. And tonight while I ...

Little Farmhouse in the Big City: these apples, those apples, all the apples
http://littlefarmhouseinthebigcity.blogspot.com/2013/10/these-apples-those-apples-all-apples.html
Little Farmhouse in the Big City. Monday, October 21, 2013. These apples, those apples, all the apples. This is called Apple Day at the Farmhouse. It's a real thing. These are the adorable mini caramel apple crumbles that Magdalena made without a recipe (she's brilliant at that sort of thing). This is the most high-maintenance, but delicious, apple pie you've ever met in your life. I went to five liquor stores to find the apple brandy for the sauce. Aprons are a must. This is the apple jam.

Little Farmhouse in the Big City: VOLUNTEER | a poem
http://littlefarmhouseinthebigcity.blogspot.com/2013/08/volunteer-poem.html
Little Farmhouse in the Big City. Sunday, August 11, 2013. Not a poem by me, no, I do not write poetry. This was written for me by a dear friend (and a real poet). It is so meaningful to me at this particular point in my life. For many reasons. I just had to share it with you. And when Kelin was visiting last week, we took a walk around the neighborhood and high-fived the plants. /love/. What I want out of a vine is a safe place for insects. What I want out of a leaf is a high five. LFITBC is a home deco...

Little Farmhouse in the Big City: Prairie Home Summer
http://littlefarmhouseinthebigcity.blogspot.com/2013/07/prairie-home-summer.html
Little Farmhouse in the Big City. Thursday, July 11, 2013. The last two summers have been full of weddings and travel - California, Georgia, Texas, even Hawaii. All the trips made for some great vacations and reunions with friends. June looked like a road trip to Rice Lake, Wisconsin for a colleague's wedding, with a fun cheese shop stop on the way back . Another road trip to the same part of Wisconsin for a cabin weekend on Spooner Lake with college buddies . 4 A visit to the Laura Ingalls Wilder museum...

Little Farmhouse in the Big City: May 2013
http://littlefarmhouseinthebigcity.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html
Little Farmhouse in the Big City. Tuesday, May 28, 2013. Veggies and herbs of 2013. Wow, time flies. This wasn't the year to add raised beds to the backyard since I'm still figuring out what I'm going to do with the back patio and some trees. So I just planned veggies and herbs for the spots I've used previously: the strip between the patio and fence, and a few pots and in-ground areas by the back door. In the ground this year:. Tomatoes (two varieties - Early Girl and Yellow Pear). Sunday, May 26, 2013.

Wednesday, July 16, 2014. CSSA Class of 2004 Reunion. Ten years ago, we did this:. So it seemed like a good time to have a little "check-in" with the cohort. Those who could gathered in Corvallis last week for a little reunion. It was great because there was no group work and no Think Cards! We gathered updates from as many cohort-mates as possible, and they are consolidated here. Crazy, I know! I wish I could be there with all of you today! As far as check-ins go, I'm still at Earlham College in Indiana...
