Life Lessons from Overseas: The Shocking Reality of Culture Shock | Hot Pot

Living life and raising a family around the world. Life Lessons from Overseas. Life Lessons from Overseas. Life Lessons from Overseas: The Shocking Reality of Culture Shock. May 17, 2012. Culture shock can hit you anywhere, even Paris (or in this case-Georgetown). Here’s the thing about culture shock, it’s a total misnomer. But no, that’s not how it works. Those first moments are never as bad as you think they will be and, in fact, you might even revel in them. I know I have. The books call i...You so de...

Living life and raising a family around the world. Life Lessons from Overseas. To feel known is to feel home. July 6, 2013. It’s been nearly 10 years since I left the place I still often refer to as “home” when far away. I return every year to the same house, the same diner, the same frozen custard stand and I expect to feel familiar, to feel like I might actually understand the lives and dreams of the people I see around me far better or more accurately than I can the people I meet overseas. I return ev...

Living life and raising a family around the world. Life Lessons from Overseas. Life Lessons from Overseas. Life Lessons from Overseas: Things I Learned as a ‘Diplomat’s’ Wife–A New Mini-Series! May 7, 2012. Random Chengdu photo from our last few weeks in town. That would somehow magically not apply to me and I would find fulfilling and important work to do with great non-profits on the ground in China. I would never sit at home, hitting refresh on the New York Times website and counting down the minu...

You Can Call Me Al: May 2015
http://alcaniglia.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
You Can Call Me Al. Tuesday, May 19, 2015. Last Thursday was a random German holiday, so we took a 4 day road trip through the Bavarian Alps. Drove down to Munich on Wednesday night and Sara landed in Munich from the US on Thursday morning. Our first stop was in Dachau - the first German concentration camp in a Munich suburb. The famous "Arbeit Macht Frei" (Work sets you free) sign. A chess set carved by one of the prisoners. The mountains actually make the castle look small. I love this view. In honor o...

You Can Call Me Al. Monday, September 22, 2014. I got to cross an item off my bucket list this weekend when I attended the opening day of Oktoberfest in Munich. After driving down Friday night, we had a hearty German meal, followed by some pretzels and schnapps shots in the hotel room. On Saturday morning, we started off nice and early - leaving the hotel around 815 in the morning. That's 7 full liters of beer! Links to this post. Monday, September 15, 2014. FOLLOW OUR UNUSUAL LIFE ABROAD (currently in MALTA) IN THE FOREIGN SERVICE. Sunday, March 29, 2015. Filling in the Space- Milan, Italy. The previous couple posts were the brunt of our time in Milan. And I found it easier to post pics, if I chopped up the trip. Kinda have a habit of oversnapping pics.kinda. We enjoyed the Katy Perry concert, Lunar New Year and Duomo immensely, but these little tidbits sure made us happy, as well. Having no real agenda was nice ;) Loving lunch pizza so much that we ordered...

FOLLOW OUR UNUSUAL LIFE ABROAD (currently in MALTA) IN THE FOREIGN SERVICE. Monday, June 30, 2014. Our sweet neighbor invited us to come pick nectarines at his farm recently. So on a fresh summer day during our school break, we meandered down the winding alleys and streets of Gharghur and landed at his gate. A week's worth of nectarines, flowers and big smiles. such a nice morning! We've also had the great opportunity to visit other local farms. Monday, June 23, 2014. World Cup at the Aquarium. Beyond the Cornfields: Behind the Scenes Tour- Malta National Aquarium

FOLLOW OUR UNUSUAL LIFE ABROAD (currently in MALTA) IN THE FOREIGN SERVICE. Monday, May 18, 2015. Behind the Scenes Tour- Malta National Aquarium. Aside from beaches, the Malta Aquarium has to be our most frequented place in Malta that we go as a family. It is solitude from winter gloom and a retreat from summer heat. It teaches. It relaxes. It amazes each of us in our own way. The playground keeps the kids thrilled, but so do the fish. I love that they are both so familiar and at home at the aquarium.

FOLLOW OUR UNUSUAL LIFE ABROAD (currently in MALTA) IN THE FOREIGN SERVICE. Thursday, May 21, 2015. Verdala International Night- Malta- 2015. Each year, the International school hosts an evening International Night. It is one of the biggest events, with each table filled with various country's foods and treats. We all pitch in, cook and volunteer at the stands. Our stand was a hit, maybe in part because of awesome Ruben, who was yelling out "get your hot dogs, get your fresh popcorn! Wife, mama, gardener...
Tuk & Tam: First Impressions of Addis

Two kids, two cats and two diplomats exploring the world with the U.S. Foreign Service. Sunday, January 11, 2015. First Impressions of Addis. We have been here for 10 days now and I thought I’d sit down and document what we have seen and experienced so far. Another nice thing about Addis is that unlike most other places in Africa, there’s no malaria, again because of the high altitude, so thankfully, we don’t have to take anti-malaria medication. The house also has some. We have a tiny but lovely yard, m...

Two kids, two cats and two diplomats exploring the world with the U.S. Foreign Service. Friday, April 10, 2015. So we are watching Wall.E, the movie tonight. Max and I are snuggled on the couch and Nia and Paul are sitting in the armchairs nearby. Max is starting to understand that Wall.E is falling for EVA. All of a sudden he says to me:. I love you, Mommy! Me: I love you too, Sweetheart! Max: Mommy, will you marry me? Me: But Max, I’m already taken. Max: OK, maybe tomorrow…. Links to this post. The wee...

Tuk & Tam: December 2014
http://tukytam.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
Two kids, two cats and two diplomats exploring the world with the U.S. Foreign Service. Tuesday, December 30, 2014. Let the move to Ethiopia begin…. This morning bright and early, I deposited my husband, my daughter, my mother, the cats and way too many suitcases to the airport, so they can begin their 12.5 hour direct flight to Addis. They should have arrived in Addis by now but no word from them yet. But I got my Unicorn Farts nail polish on, so I am ready for anything! Thrifty to go to a salon.).
