How to Be Israeli: A guide to monosyllabic Hebrew

http://howtobeisraeli.blogspot.com/2009/05/guide-to-monosyllabic-hebrew.html

A guide to monosyllabic Hebrew. It occurs to me that Hebrew ulpan and university Hebrew classes lack a major component of speaking Hebrew like an Israeli: grunts, "ehhhhs," and other monosyllabic Hebrew. So here's a guide for the perplexed. In the comments, please add any monosyllables I missed! Nu" is basically a verbal nudge- best translation into English might be "come on! As my husband says, it means "well? In both the "how are you? Example: Nu cvar, are you going to call Dudu about the falofel?

How to Be Israeli: Can you read Hebrish?

http://howtobeisraeli.blogspot.com/2009/07/can-you-read-hebrish.html

Can you read Hebrish? When I first started to learn Hebrew, the prospect of reading without vowels was daunting. (Most printed Hebrew contains consonants without the vowel notations- it's like reading Englsh lk ths. Hrd, rght? Except that it isn't. Like reading English like that. The good news is that you don't even need Hebrew skills to try to read these, for the most part- you just need to learn the aleph-bet. Hint- a צ with an apostrophe after it makes a "ch" sound). This is a tricky one, but I had to...

How to Be Israeli: Get One Car Ahead

http://howtobeisraeli.blogspot.com/2009/10/get-one-car-ahead_25.html

Get One Car Ahead. The car on the right in the picture above is not signaling- don't worry. It's breaking as it figures out how to cut in front of the pickup flying the giant Israeli flag. There are two reasons why getting One Car Ahead is so crucial:. 1 You are always in a hurry. 2 You are always late. This actually mystified the Argentinians in my ulpan class; they came from a culture of manana. Before leaving home, he will surely get rich . Every Israeli, remember, is an expert. For the record, I driv...

How to Be Israeli: How to host Thanksgiving like an Israeli...

http://howtobeisraeli.blogspot.com/2010/11/how-to-host-thanksgiving-like-israeli.html

How to host Thanksgiving like an Israeli. From http:/ simplyrecipes.com/photos/pumpkin-pie.jpg). Ok, so if you really want to host Thanksgiving like an Israeli, don't host it at all. (Yeah, that whole "It's an American holiday" thing.) But unlike Easter, Christmas, Halloween, New Year's Eve, and Valentine's day- also holidays not really celebrated here- I feel Thanksgiving is worth keeping, in a nostalgic and let's-force-Israeli-friends-to-eat-American-food kind of way. 1 Be flexible about dates. And the...

Nitsah can wait to go as Sexy Hamentaschen. Until she's 13 or so. March 7, 2012 at 10:57 PM. She is adorable :). March 8, 2012 at 3:51 AM. March 8, 2012 at 5:45 PM. Happy Purim, Maya. Its been a while since I visited your site and now I see you have a new arrival! A much-belated Mazel Tov! At first, I thought this was just 1 picture repeated nine times, but when I looked at the larger image, I see shes in different positions and your (I presume) feet are different too! Matt / משה Made Aliyah: Birthday

http://blog.mattgottlieb.com/2009/07/birthday.html

Matt / משה Made Aliyah. Sunday, July 19, 2009. Silvy arrived and we headed first to the beach at Hertzlia, which is only a few miles from where I am living. We then walked down to the Mall next to the Hertzlia Marina, walked around a little, I talked to Jessica while Silvy was trying on some clothes. We then went to the marina and walked around while also looking for the choices in kosher dining overlooking the marina. We found there were only three choices, two nicer places and a pizza place. Matt / משה Made Aliyah: Harry Potter

http://blog.mattgottlieb.com/2009/07/harry-potter.html

Matt / משה Made Aliyah. Sunday, July 26, 2009. Well as for my review, I love anything Harry Potter, so in that light I enjoyed it. I was disappointed that certain p. Arts of the book were omitted but since I know the "whole story" I'll just have to accept that I know what really happened. If you click on the pic of the ticket you might be able to read it (if you read Hebrew) although it is a little fuzzy. Matt Gottlieb / משה גוטליב. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). July 6th, 2009. Nitsah can wait to go as Sexy Hamentaschen. Until she's 13 or so. Links to this post. How to give gifts like an Israeli. If you're at an Israeli wedding, don't look for a gift table. look for one of these. Israelis, on the other hand, have no qualms about being tacky- see, for example, the Israeli Wedding Dress. At the same time, Israelis definitely have social norms about how gifts should be given, though these social norms would make Dear Abby stuff her keyboard in her mouth. Telling a story more serio...
