Reflections from highland park folks. May 22, 2015. May 22, 2015. What does “faith” really mean? Written by Debra Longoria. What is faith in our God? Should God treat us like little children and just tell us what to do? Would we obey if He did? Would that be considered a mature faith? Just knowing that God is present and that’s it? Reflections from highland park folks. May 4, 2015. Written by Alana Mallard. Surveying my crops and livestock that’s how I like to talk about going into my back yard and walking under the trees among gardens and birdfeeders, to the pond and compost pile. Henri Nouwen says in Bread for the Journey that community is a quality of the heart, a quality that grows from the spiritual knowledge that we are alive not for ourselves but for one another. Community, he says, is the fruit of our capacity to make t...

Movie Review: Midnight Special. April 12, 2016. Alton Meyer is just like any other eight-year old boy: cute, precocious, and did I mention that he needs to stay inside during the day, sleep at night, and that he shoots beams of energy out of his eyes! If this all seems like the beginning to an amazing science fiction movie, you are right. The writer and director, Jeff Nichols, has been compared to J. J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg as the next great sci-fi writer/director for this generation. April 4, 2016.

Reflections from highland park folks. June 9, 2015. June 9, 2015. Written by Cathy Glazener. Sunday School – I use the phrase so much that I don’t realize how antiquated it must sound to lots of people. Too bad, because my Sunday School class is far from quaint or antiquated. Maybe my continuing to use the phrase means that I’m not seeing things from others’ perspectives, so, I’m going to let it go. Not a big deal, just a habit to break. 2 thoughts on “ Sunday School. https://hpbcblog.wordpress.com/2015/05/12/humility
Reflections from highland park folks. May 12, 2015. May 12, 2015. Written by Walt Shelton. What does it mean to be humble, and why is it so important? Humility is frequently misunderstood. It also seems a bit counter to much of contemporary American culture. Nevertheless, humility is foundational for the practical expression of faith. In Colossians, Paul encouraged his readers to “clothe” themselves with humility (Col. 3:12). How are we to understand and apply this in life? When we spend less time lookin...
