When aviation pioneer Albrecht Berblinger, the famous tailor of Ulm, tried in 1811 his courageous crossing of the Danube river, he fell into the water. Despite his failure he became the inspiration for many later developers and pilots and his home town Ulm dedicated since 1986 a competition aiming at aviation innovations to his honour. At the same time it resulted starting from 1995 on into an opportunity for more than 40 students to develop a very special aircraft and to take it into the air.

After winning the Berblinger Prize in 1996, icaré was kept in operation and improved continuously. Always the idea was to make solar powered flights along great distances. Already on 17. June 2003 project leader Prof. Voit-Nitschmann succeeded to fly in Germany from Aalen to Jena with a flight distance surpassing 300 km. Shortly thereafter FAI defined the international record class of solar powered aircraft, where now world record may be established. Distance up to 3 turn points.
