Free Bag o' Tricks. Saturday, September 27, 2014. Beauty Bag: Lavender Ion Color Brilliance Review. If you've been following my blog for a while, you know that I am VERY passionate about education. Theory and pedagogy are my thanggg! However, just like every other teacher on this planet, there is more to me than teaching. For that reason, I'm going to start posting more frequently about health, wellness, and beauty - the other loves of my life. So, I decided to put in some lavender peekaboos! What did I ...

http://brownbagacademics.blogspot.com/2014/09/lil-durk-time-building-community-within.html
Free Bag o' Tricks. Thursday, September 18, 2014. Lil' Durk Time: Building Community within the Classroom. Apparently there is a new up-and-coming, Chicago-based rapper. Lil' Durk. How do I know this? Well my students were taking a survey for my Peer Advocate (more about this down below) so that he could learn more about them. One of the survey questions: Who is your favorite artist? As I creeped over their shoulders, I learned that many of them really liked Lil' Durk. Give them a chance to connect with ...

Brownbag Academics: September 2014
http://brownbagacademics.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Free Bag o' Tricks. Tuesday, September 30, 2014. Caution: Freebie for My Followers ahead! Commenting is something that I didn't used to discuss with my students. Sure, I would read my students' papers and mark allllll over them. I felt like I was imparting my wisdom. After all, I had studied this content intensely. shouldn't I be sharing my wisdom? It wasn't until I read and heard Nancy Sommers talk about Responding to Student Writing. Bouncing off of that idea, I have my students create a Mini-Class Man...

Brownbag Academics: Reflection in the Classroom
http://brownbagacademics.blogspot.com/2014/08/as-teachers-we-know-how-important-it-is.html
Free Bag o' Tricks. Thursday, August 7, 2014. Reflection in the Classroom. As teachers, we know how important it is to reflect. We reflect every time a lesson goes good, bad, terrible, or horrendous. But how often do we have our students. Typically we set aside time for our students to reflect after they've written an essay, right? This is usually part of the peer review process where they think about what they did well in their essay and the areas that they struggled in. These window frames are set up t...

Brownbag Academics: August 2014
http://brownbagacademics.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html
Free Bag o' Tricks. Tuesday, August 19, 2014. I was a little MIA last week as I visited West Palm Beach with my mom as a sort of Last Fling for the summer! It was a wonderful time! We visited Sloan's Ice Cream. The bathroom has a glass wall. When you lock the door - it freezes out in solid white! How cool is that? Then I got to live out my CSI: Miami fantasies by going on an alligator air boat tour in the Everglades. And visiting South Beach. Air boat tour = amazing. South Beach= eh. Who cares. Be as sha...

Brownbag Academics: Adventures with Doctopus
http://brownbagacademics.blogspot.com/2014/07/adventures-with-doctopus.html
Free Bag o' Tricks. Tuesday, July 29, 2014. Today I discovered Doctopus. Apparently I'm a year behind but it's better late than never, right Brownbaggers? Doctopus is a Google Sheets Add On and, according to its description, it was designed with "teacher workflow in mind - taming complexity and unlocking the power of Google Apps for differentiation and collaboration." Quite a claim! I wonder if the directions make sense to people who have used Doctopus over the past year, but as a newbie I was confused.

Free Bag o' Tricks. I'm Mackenzie, the author of the Brownbag Academics Blog! I help new teachers examine themselves and what they have learned about education, so that the challenging first year of teaching seems. well less challenging! Had trouble developing clear goals for yourself, your course, or your students? Felt that your non-verbal cues are putting off something different than your verbal cues? Been nervous and jittery in front of students? Been confronted by a student, parent or colleague?
