Living Shorelines – Sea Monster
http://theseamonster.net/2014/04/living-shorelines
Jared Brumbaugh of the eastern NC NPR affiliate did a great piece and interview. A 5th year PhD student in my lab) about her work on salt marsh conservation and living shorelines. Protecting shorelines with natural, vegetative barriers is not only better for the ecosystem, it’s a more effective means of slowing shoreline erosion. We speak to a local researcher about her work with living shorelines. This entry was posted on Wednesday, April 30th, 2014 at 9:32 am. It is filed under Uncategorized.

Threatened staghorn coral invades Fort Lauderdale! – Sea Monster
http://theseamonster.net/2014/04/staghorn-coral-invades-fort-lauderdale
Threatened staghorn coral invades Fort Lauderdale! Close up of a typical coastal habitat:. I had heard from my buddy Bill Precht that. Is moving northward along the Florida reef track in response to global warming. Precht and Aronson have a great paper in FEE (2004) “Climate flickers and range shifts of reef corals”. That outlines all of this. Though now rare throughout their Caribbean range (mainly due to white band disease), staghorn corals appear to be moving northward into Palm Beach County:. Eg, the...

Cephalove: Pass the clams, please: A strategy for object retrieval in the octopus.
http://cephalove.blogspot.com/2010/07/pass-clams-please-strategy-for-object.html
A blog documenting my intellectual love affair with our many-armed friends. Tuesday, July 27, 2010. Pass the clams, please: A strategy for object retrieval in the octopus. I recently blogged about a line of research on octopus reaching movements. But I left out an important study for time's sake. I promised to cover it promptly, and so I'm making good on that promise here. To recap:. The study I'll look at today is Octopuses Use a Human-like Strategy to Control Precise Point-to-Point Arm Movements. Cambr...

THE SPINELESS LIFE: Snail survey (and a horseshoe crab)
http://thespinelesslife.blogspot.com/2014/08/snail-survey-and-horseshoe-crab.html
Invertebrates are pretty awesome. Here's why. Monday, August 11, 2014. Snail survey (and a horseshoe crab). Well, obviously it's been a while. This is mostly because I've been writing a lot and that's not really good inspiration for a) writing more for fun or b) writing about things that you (presumably not a member of my committee, given the odds) want to read. Babies for a last-ditch attempt at an experiment. There were lots of birds out today, and this horseshoe crab. I also found all of the common in...
