a porcupine in New York: August 2008
http://porcupineinnewyork.blogspot.com/2008_08_01_archive.html
A porcupine in New York. Pointed views of art, New York, and human foibles. Sunday, August 24, 2008. Suzanne Vega played a concert on Thursday night in what seemed like an unlikely and surprisingly modest venue - the Brooklyn Masonic Temple in beautiful Fort Greene, Brooklyn. With an opening by Christina Courtin, Vega was crisp, funny, and perhaps even a bit self-conscious, but I think she reminded all of her fans why her albums were played over and over in the 1990s. A Barbary Ape Tried to Eat Me and My BLT. Humorous Blips from a Backpack. Tuesday, September 04, 2007. Frostbitten Eyelids in Finland. Poor Lace, all she wants to do is go to Greece, but I won't let her, because it's my one chance to hit the nordic countries while I'm in Europe. Mind you, it's Christmas break, but what of it? We're both burly girls from Alaska, we can handle the cold! Cas: "Excuse me, but I can't help but notice your eyelids are extremely swollen.". I attempt to roll my eyes at him, but ...

A Barbary Ape Tried to Eat Me and My BLT. Humorous Blips from a Backpack. Tuesday, August 26, 2003. First Day of Class. My first day of school is also hell. My first class is conducting with the evil George Stelluto. He decides to sit around all day asking broad, metaphysical questions and then making fun of us for trying to answer. It gets so bad that other people actually express sorrow for me. Conversation between Holly and some kids from my class-. Kids: "Yeah, George is such an asshole. ". So I've g...

A Barbary Ape Tried to Eat Me and My BLT. Humorous Blips from a Backpack. Sunday, September 16, 2007. A Gondolier in China, How It All Begins. Our story begins when my good friend, Andrea, calls me in early July to chat about her plans to travel to Macau, China. She’ll be training a group of gondoliers who are opening four rides in the second-largest building in the world, the brand spankin' new, Venetian Macau. It's a particularly uneventful day at Starbucks, and my shift is dragging. I’m on b...You sho...

A porcupine in New York. Pointed views of art, New York, and human foibles. Sunday, February 03, 2008. This reminds me of when I edited a Wall Street weekly and some of the analysts wanted to publish something called a "blog." It was supposed to be edgy and topical. But it's edited and printed - how is that a blog? I objected. "Do they even know what a blog is? Here it is: The Metropolitan Museum of Art's fashion blog. And here is a well-considered view of the matter. Via Ed W.:. View my complete profile.

A porcupine in New York. Pointed views of art, New York, and human foibles. Friday, February 08, 2008. Beauty, kitsch and controversy at Radio City. Chinese New Year Splendor. At Radio City Music Hall is billed as “a spectacular showcase of classical Chinese performing arts accompanied by a full orchestra and a dazzling high-tech backdrop,” and in most respects, that’s probably true. Soon Jerry tells the audience that this program could not be seen in China because of its repressive government. The d...

Absolute Classic Masterpieces: February 2007
http://absoluteclassicmasterpieces.blogspot.com/2007_02_01_archive.html
Wednesday, February 28. So, Simon Reynolds and gang are slowly drifting away from the hauntology discussion and beginning to riff on "hipster metal.". I have noticed an increased metal presence on the intertubes lately, but I really don't feel like it's a full-fledged phenomenon at this point. Most of the discourse. Appears to revolve around the band Sunn O) ). And the occurrence of one influential DJ mixing metal with dubstep. Look at a band like Sisters of Mercy, who sounded very metal in their early d...
