Improbable Pantry - Asian Fling: Enough kimchi for a lifetime of exploration

http://improbablepantry-asian.blogspot.com/2010/11/enough-kimchi-for-lifetime-of.html

Improbable Pantry - Asian Fling. Exploring the culinary wonders of the other side of the planet. Thursday, November 11, 2010. Enough kimchi for a lifetime of exploration. So nothing prepared me for what I encountered at the HMART. A wall of kimchi. In containers ranging from little jars with one pound to buckets with mega-pounds. And you could buy it in bulk too. Here's a quick rundown of what I found:. Premium cabbage kimchi, with oyster. And more. Check it out. The other simple way to use kimchi is as ...

Improbable Pantry - Asian Fling: Kimchi Pancake - Another Revelation.

http://improbablepantry-asian.blogspot.com/2010/12/kimchi-pancake-another-revelation.html

Improbable Pantry - Asian Fling. Exploring the culinary wonders of the other side of the planet. Saturday, December 4, 2010. Kimchi Pancake - Another Revelation. So here’s the deal. It’s a savory pancake. And I’m not sure I’ve ever had a savory pancake. Just like I’d never had savory oatmeal for breakfast. I’d never even thought of a savory pancake. By now, kimchi stew has become part of my normal repertoire. Susan loves it. Works with whatever I have in the house. Seems to be a theme here. Cook on mediu...

Improbable Pantry - Asian Fling: April 2011

http://improbablepantry-asian.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html

Improbable Pantry - Asian Fling. Exploring the culinary wonders of the other side of the planet. Tuesday, April 5, 2011. Experimenting again - Grilled eel with portobellos and scallions. So I didn't need much. Mushrooms were calling my name. As were scallions, not just as a flavoring, but as a full throttled vegetable. Brown rice as a bed to lay it on. Done. This is so easy it doesn't warrant a recipe. But go find one of those eels and see what else you can do with it. Once I eat down the content...I've ...

Improbable Pantry - Asian Fling: Kabocha squash revisited

http://improbablepantry-asian.blogspot.com/2011/03/kabocha-squash-revisited.html

Improbable Pantry - Asian Fling. Exploring the culinary wonders of the other side of the planet. Saturday, March 26, 2011. After my first exploration with kabocha squash. I've repeated the same formula over and over: cut into slices, roast with olive oil. Eat. A little variation entered the lexicon when I turned it into an appetizer spread. It sounded like just the thing- similar to what I'd done before, yet different enough to warrant some excitement. Since I don't have perfect slicing skills, some part...

Improbable Pantry - Asian Fling: Kimchi Stew -- A Revelation

http://improbablepantry-asian.blogspot.com/2010/11/kimchi-stew-revelation.html

Improbable Pantry - Asian Fling. Exploring the culinary wonders of the other side of the planet. Saturday, November 20, 2010. Kimchi Stew - A Revelation. You serve it over rice, and the rice soaks up all the nice bubbling scarlet broth. It cools off a bit, and you can put whole spoonfuls in your mouth. As it sits, the flavors meld, and as the heat eases, you can really taste what’s going on. 15 oz dried shiitake mushrooms. 1/2 oz dried kelp. 2 tsp vegetable oil. 10 oz kimchi, chopped. I did have some cra...

Improbable Pantry: October 2010

http://improbablepantry.blogspot.com/2010_10_01_archive.html

Tantalizing meals from humble beginnings. Friday, October 1, 2010. Grab it and go - what do I do with this Kabocha Squash? Susan asked, "what's for dinner? I answered, "leftovers." She looked sad. I poked around a bit, and eyed the kabocha, sitting in the fruit basket. Next Tiny Urban Kitchen. Seems I'd heard of that blog, but had never read it. The first line of the post Oven Roasted Kabocha Squash. Said, "It's official. I love love love kabocha squash. It's like candy for me." Voila. I know that there ...

Improbable Pantry: The Two Lost Years

http://improbablepantry.blogspot.com/2014/07/the-two-lost-years.html

Tantalizing meals from humble beginnings. Wednesday, July 9, 2014. The Two Lost Years. I posted on July 4, 2012. And then again on July 2, 2014. Two years with no posts. I had good intentions, but then two years slipped away. I didn't stop cooking and I didn't stop taking pictures. There were some good dishes in there, some more memorable than others. There's zero chance that I'll write about these pictures, but I might be inspired to try some of them again. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Improbable Pantry: March 2011

http://improbablepantry.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html

Tantalizing meals from humble beginnings. Saturday, March 26, 2011. It's probably bad form to cross post between my two blogs, but this one deserves to be on both sites. Follow my newest exploration with kabocha squash. Labels: Improbable Pantry Asian Fling. Tuesday, March 22, 2011. Have you been posting to your blog lately? Dunno What have you been doing instead? Funny how one can get out of the habit. But a 3 month hiatus deserved some attention. Perhaps a little daydreaming. What's in the freezer?

Improbable Pantry: Late Summer Corn and Tomato Alternative -- Soup but not Chowder

http://improbablepantry.blogspot.com/2015/09/late-summer-corn-and-tomato-alternative.html

Tantalizing meals from humble beginnings. Thursday, September 24, 2015. Late Summer Corn and Tomato Alternative - Soup but not Chowder. There are only so many times you can have fresh farm stand corn cooked gently on the grill served naked without butter or salt because it's so sweet just by itself, accompanied by a simple plate of heirloom tomatoes harvested from the garden, perhaps with a light sprinkle of salt and pepper and a topping of chopped. An abundance of sage! Corn and Tomato Soup. Salt and pe...

Improbable Pantry: The heirlooms are here!

http://improbablepantry.blogspot.com/2014/07/the-heirlooms-are-here.html

Tantalizing meals from humble beginnings. Thursday, July 31, 2014. The heirlooms are here! In Belmont (labna if you can't get yogurt this thick- I'm pretty sure it's the same foodstuff), some fresh oregano, and thick slices of heirloom tomato. These are purple Cherokee, an all time favorite. The Brandywine's are close behind. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Medford, Massachusetts, United States. View my complete profile. Improbable Pantry: September 2010

http://improbablepantry.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html

Tantalizing meals from humble beginnings. Wednesday, September 22, 2010. Late summer tomato and pasta collision. I've written about the roasted tomato thing before, so I won't repeat. Go for the original Molly Wizenberg version. That's what I did. Suffice to say, that roasted tomatoes on hearty bread, perhaps with some goat or other soft cheese is heavenly. I tricked the season a little by doing them on the gas grill outside, so it wouldn't heat up the kitchen. Enter the vegetable drawer in the fridge, w...

Improbable Pantry: So THAT'S what you do with porgy!

http://improbablepantry.blogspot.com/2016/04/so-thats-what-you-do-with-porgy.html

Tantalizing meals from humble beginnings. Tuesday, April 26, 2016. So THAT'S what you do with porgy! I got inspired by an Edible Boston article by Sarah Blackburn called Edible Basics: Red Fish, Blue Fish, Flat Fish, Whole Fish? Porgy I'd seen porgy in the Burlington HMart fish case for years- so numerous and so inexpensive. And fresh. And based on Sarah's article and other sources. Armed with Sarah's article, and the accompanying recipe. Why wouldn't I have this OFTEN? I can think of so many other ways ...

Improbable Pantry: Pesto, without the nasty cleanup

http://improbablepantry.blogspot.com/2015/09/pesto-without-nasty-cleanup.html

Tantalizing meals from humble beginnings. Thursday, September 17, 2015. Pesto, without the nasty cleanup. It's September, and our three basil plants have been supplying us all spring and summer. As long as I keep up with the occasional flower, they seem happy. With the season winding down, it was time to give them a major haircut, which means it's pesto time! So it was with great excitement that I read the following lines from one of the e-mail blasts from Kitchen Gardeners International. Improbable Pant...

Improbable Pantry: May 2016

http://improbablepantry.blogspot.com/2016_05_01_archive.html

Tantalizing meals from humble beginnings. Saturday, May 7, 2016. You mean we can eat that? Last year, on a whim, we bought "Backyard Foraging- 65 Familiar Plants You Didn't Know You Could Eat," by Ellen Zachos. We discovered that much of what Susan grows as ornamental, is edible. For example, those pretty yellow flowers that a friend gave us a few years ago are really sunchokes, which we can harvest every fall after the first frost or two. And that infuriating bishop's weed is edible!

Rickety Contrivances of Doing Good

Rickety Contrivances of Doing Good. Science Fiction. Progressive Christianity. And Other Improbable Optimisms. Sunday, August 13, 2017. Necessary, but not Sufficient. Here's today's homily. The readings are Genesis 37:1-4, 12-28. We know they have happy endings. The people inside them, though, can't know that everything will be all right. They're probably about to become ghosts, too. Then the ghost speaks. "Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.". Luckily, it really is Jesus. He reaches out and catch...
