The Department was the first in India to be selected by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 1989 for Special Assistance Programme (SAP) in Journalism and was sanctioned Rs. 34 lakh. Further, it also received Rs 32.55 lakh from the UGC under the ASIHSS programme. In its Golden Jubilee year (2004), it was one of the two Journalism departments in the country to be awarded this programme. Centre for Advanced Study in Journalism (Phase II).

Board of Studies Academic and Professional Role. The Board of Studies is the apex academic body of the Department. The Board comprises faculty from Osmania, other universities, as well as experts from the industry. The Department revises the syllabi every few years to keep up with the changing needs of the profession and the advances in theoretical knowledge. All the faculty members of the Department are also regular media practitioners and are associated with various media organisations in different ways.
