India Outside My Window: Life in a slum in India

http://www.indiaoutsidemywindow.com/2015/03/life-in-slum-in-india.html

Life in a slum in India. As we began our walk, our guide Dinesh from Reality Tours. We carefully climbed a narrow metal ladder up to the roof where a panorama of Dharavi’s rooftops of corrugated iron stretched all around us. A mosque dominated the skyline. Photography was not allowed on this tour, but this is a view I’ll remember for a long time. Photos courtesy of Reality Tours. Subscribe to: Post Comments ( Atom ). Whats outside my window. Hindu festivals and customs. Life in a slum in India.

India Outside My Window: India travel tip: How to deal with staring in India

http://www.indiaoutsidemywindow.com/2015/03/travel-tip-how-to-deal-with-staring-in.html

India travel tip: How to deal with staring in India. When my sister-in-law and her young daughter came to visit us while we were living in Bangalore, I took the little girl for a walk around the neighbourhood. Two minutes into our walk, she asked me: “Why is everyone staring at me? 8221; I told her that people are not used to seeing a little white girl and that they were curious and intrigued but that they didn’t mean any harm. She wanted to go back inside! Act completely oblivious to the world around yo...

India Outside My Window: June 2013

Wherever you decide to live long-term, it’s always good to learn the local language. Learning at least a few rudimentary basics can take you a long way and help you connect with the local culture. You should learn Hindi instead, they you can use it all over India.”. I did finally find an excellent teacher who gave me a good grounding in the language. Unfortunately, after two years of weekly classes with her, she suddenly suffered a heart attack and passed away. There are indeed many good reasons to learn...

India Outside My Window: August 2014

http://www.indiaoutsidemywindow.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

I’ll be back. It’s been just over a year now. Since I left India. Sometimes I wonder how I got here. How did I manage to leave India? I had always said that someone would have to drag me away kicking and screaming. But it didn’t quite happen that way. On to new adventures. And life is not so bad. I survived. But I’ll be back. India is calling me. So don’t abandon this blog because when I go back to India I’ll be sharing the colours, sights and sounds I see, hear and experience again. I’ll be back. Thanks...

India Outside My Window: April 2013

http://www.indiaoutsidemywindow.com/2013_04_01_archive.html

In today's edition of The Hindu, V.R. Devika asks some pertinent questions: Why are non-Hindus not allowed into temples? Also, how do you recognize a Hindu? I've been to many, many temples across South India and wasn't able to enter the sanctums of most. At the Jagannath temple. In Puri, Orissa, non-Hindus are not even allowed to enter the temple complex! Simply because they're Indian and therefore are assumed to be Hindu. Read the article here. Have you heard of Bangalore’s cardboard cop? I wanted to ta...

Lucy Edge's blog. Laquo; Yoga class at Latitude. Eat Pray Cash In. According to today’s Guardian Yoga School Dropout and Handbag and Wellies are part of ‘a new breed of self-discovery lit’. Not so new actually – YSD was published in 2004, a year before Eat Pray Love, which is now out in the US as a movie, a fragrance, a bangle and an om bead necklace. Prepare for my range of Yoga School Dropout chakra panties, and perhaps an essence of sadhu perfume – yum! Any other suggestions welcome. From your own site.

Kroswami: December 2008

http://kroswami.blogspot.com/2008_12_01_archive.html

KARMA, KRAP AND THE KROW WHICH NEVER SANG. Friday, December 26, 2008. Presents, profanity and poor thumbi. College organised a "Christmas brunch" today. Merriment overflowed as an interesting variety of food was served in the campus fields. People laughed and took pictures of each other wearing Santa caps and signs which said Merry Christmas. The warm sun shined on the youthful and there was that pleasant buzz which hovers around such gatherings. Or so I was told. Ooooo well excuse me! B If me brother hi...

Letters from Florence: Cultural imperialism, one sandwich at a time

http://lettersfromflorence.blogspot.com/2010/09/cultural-imperialism-one-sandwich-at.html

Italy for the intrepid. Thursday, September 30, 2010. Cultural imperialism, one sandwich at a time. I'm feeling guilty. I served a peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich to an Italian child yesterday. Granted, the ingredients were top-quality: unadulterated peanut butter from the Netherlands, delicious locally-produced strawberry preserves, durum-wheat bread. And yet, I couldn't help but think that I was being horribly blasphemous. For Maria Giulia, no beans in Mirko's. Is tantamount to digestive treason.

Letters from Florence: A burglary and a departure

http://lettersfromflorence.blogspot.com/2013/07/a-burglary-and-departure.html

Italy for the intrepid. Tuesday, July 23, 2013. A burglary and a departure. So Florence said to me, in that overdramatic way she has- you know, all Carmela Soprano after a bad manicure: "Get the f* * outta here, and pronto! Or, perhaps like a cross between a miffed Mark Twain and an angry/drunk F. Scott Fitzgerald: "Take that pusillanimous Yankee derriere and those imperfect verb conjugating skills and be off with you! Back to the slimy green breast of the New World! So pretty, this den of thieves. No ma...

Italy for the intrepid. Sunday, June 09, 2013. As many of you know, very very soon I'm moving. To Portland, OR. Time to begin a new chapter and all that. I've been so busy this past month planning the move and packing (and purging- my God! And watch this space for my eventual new blogging incarnation, which is still in the embryonic stage. Thanks for reading, friends. Yours from the Tuscan trenches,. Posted by Elizabeth Petrosian. Looking forward to the new incarnation! Elizabeth P. aka Campobello. Thank...

Letters from Florence: Sociable medicine

http://lettersfromflorence.blogspot.com/2011/03/sociable-medicine.html

Italy for the intrepid. Saturday, March 05, 2011. Sundry winter ills have recently propelled me into the labyrinthine Italian healthcare system, or. Which, I might add [insert oozing sarcasm] is always a pleasure. To me, partaking of this [insert oozing sarcasm again]. Is often like being inside. For example, the doctor's waiting-room I was recently prisoner to was full of black-clad decrepits in shapeless parkas and sturdy shoes, all hacking ostentatiously as if they had tuberculosis, sighing heavily, a...

India Outside India

Why "India Outside India"? Friday, May 16, 2014. Facebook has been going crazy for a while building up to the Indian elections. I have never seen strong views for and against and emotions running so high with respect to the political parties. I am happy that my Facebook feed showed views from all sides. That means I don't live in a news bubble. The greatest shocker though was the gathering in Times Square to watch Indian election news as the counting began May 16 morning IST and May 15 night eastern time.

India Outside My Window

10 YEARS AGO TODAY I started my India Outside My Window blog, one month after moving to Bangalore. Every week I wrote about what I was seeing around me, and shared the sights, colours, and even sounds of India via my blog posts. In 2013, I left India and started a new blog about my new life in Istria, Croatia. But continued to update the India blog when I would return for three months each winter. I'm in Bangalore as I write this! Or continue to post while I'm in India? Fruits you must try in India.

The drive for efficient business services sweeps over national boundaries, but ignores cultural differences at its peril. The difference is clear: are you buying from someone or doing it yourself? The advantages of offshoring, however, are similar. Cost is the main driver, without a doubt, says Philip Carnelley, senior business adviser ...
