Finding Solutions | Inquiry for Equality

https://inquiryforequality.wordpress.com/2007/04/17/finding-solutions

An attempt to understand the disparities in underprivileged schools for the sake of making a difference. Once racial and socioeconomic disparities are recognized, it is difficult to determine how to address these issues. We seem to be most comfortable with taking a color blind approach and avoiding reverse favoritism, but this seems to do nothing to help the issues. I hope that some day Affirmative action will not be necessary. Today, I simply do not think this is true. It ends up not being equal at all.

An attempt to understand the disparities in underprivileged schools for the sake of making a difference. Super Size Me Linda Christensen style. The first time I watched this documentary, I did not eat McDonalds for one year. I started once again eating McDonalds when seldom guilty cravings would strike me, only to quit once again when my husband who used to work at McDonalds told me about his job on a daily basis. Such a finding would not surprise me at this point. By the end of the school year, Alex and...

An attempt to understand the disparities in underprivileged schools for the sake of making a difference. A Glipse at the Cause of the Inequality. As a child, I knew that some families had more money than others. I knew that some of my classmate’s parents could afford better clothes for them than mine could. I also knew that some children were not as fortunate as I was. I knew that some children’s parents could not afford to feed them at all, while mine could afford certain foods but not others. This comm...

Alternative, Innovative Learning. April 17, 2007 in Uncategorized. After posting all about learning styles, I actually came across an article from the Sacramento Bee about schools that are providing a way for students with specific interests and talents can utilize them in a classroom setting. The program that has been developed is very innovative, and also extremely specific:. These classes in this new program do not deter away from the regular academic schedule, but are offered as elective courses for ...

Sound Of Silence: Deaf Education Today. Shock, Grief, Confusion and…What? March 1, 2007 at 3:44 am ( ASL. Too often in our society, we look at differences and see them as setbacks. Words like ‘handicapped’ ‘disabled’ and ‘impaired’ all carry strong negative connotations to them. These terms all say the same thing, ‘this person has a problem that stops them from doing everything normally ’. No, no, no, no, no! Initially, this sounds positive, right? Well, I guess that depends on what you’re looking ...

Impeccable Timing and Dynamic Wit. A little help from the Professionals…. February 24, 2007 in Uncategorized. As college students we think we know it all sometimes. I’ll admit it…I know more than my professors and my parents and any other authority figure. Or maybe I would just like to think I do…. During a book-reading interview with the Deseret Morning News, Pulitzer-prize winning author, Marilynne Robinson, was asked about advice she would give to writing students and writers in general. Nicole’s fabulous opinions! Let’s censor students AFTER they started to read the book! March 29, 2007 at 12:41 pm · Filed under 311. The school in Louisville has never had a policy on censorship and banning certain books. The school board has to create a policy because they had more than two parental complaints about the book and its vulgarity. Here is an interesting quote from the principal of the school and what he has to say about the complaints and the book. Novel yanked from class. This is an intere...
