Instant Boat---Indeed......

Saturday, September 1, 2012. So, today I went out to Frenchtown Pond with the Pica and met up with James with the Blue Flower. You don't really see much mention of Teal's really showing up in groups, but sometimes they do. An excellent comparison of sail plans of the Pica (left) and Blue Flower (former Annas Discors) on the right. Don't let that gaff rig fool you. To suggest that I take the boat out. He said the Blue Flower is touchy and edgy with the wind- well he was right. The Blue Flower is a very se...

Instant Boat---Indeed......: August 2010

http://instantboat.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html

Sunday, August 29, 2010. One thing I have found is that boats do not come with square corners. Well, I suppose if I built a barge or a box boat, such as a PD Racer, I might find some square corners, but a double ended sharpie like the Teal comes with virtually none. Sometimes you just need a little dab to do ya. Using a plane like an old style box grater was what worked in this case- but watch your fingers! All that fuss for what? Friday, August 27, 2010. Keep those knots on the inside folks. Well why no...

Instant Boat---Indeed......: A Turning Point, the evolving rudder...

http://instantboat.blogspot.com/2012/05/turning-point-evolving-rudder.html

Sunday, May 13, 2012. A Turning Point, the evolving rudder. Who would have thought that sinking my boat would take the wind out of my blogging sails? Egads The story is not over (not by a long shot. I won't steer you wrong- in fact lets talk about steering! Being cheap and not really seeing anything cheap and easy to procure, the first thought was: why not make them out of wood. Yes! Wood gudgeons and wood pintles! It is a wood boat after all, no? Wait though. Wasn't the Annas Discorse. So, what resulted...

Instant Boat---Indeed......: September 2010

http://instantboat.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html

Sunday, September 12, 2010. Brightwork is pretty much just varnished woodwork. Pretty stuff, but the varnish doesn't hold up quite as well as paint and so needs touch up work (sand and recoat) much more than paint. Still, darned pretty stuff. I've pretty well decided that I will have some brightwork on the boat, namely on the gunwales and around the mast step. Here one can see the gunwales in fresh varnish. If it keeps the mildew away, all is well and good. Here is the working side of the attempt to glue...

Instant Boat---Indeed......: When Things Go South

http://instantboat.blogspot.com/2011/07/when-things-go-south.html

Saturday, July 9, 2011. When Things Go South. In many ways the construction of my boat is nearing the end- though there is plenty more to share here. Still, even with the boat built, there's much more to be learned.sometimes in ways that I'd rather not. Well, while I was able to do some sailing this year, singlehanding was being strangely elusive (people seem to like riding in my boat). Today (yes, a column written the day of the event! In the course of this, I learned a lot of interesting details that w...

Monday, November 1, 2010. Sticky Wickets- or Fun with Epoxy! Ok, back at it. Of course I'm falling behind on my blogs, as will be really obvious with the next post. Once I had bullied the hull together (well, it seemed that way with the chines.) I did a little informal test to see if I had any major problems with leaks. This was another James idea that he tried with smaller boats and it seemed plausible to me. This was a one pint plastic container- a little smoke and heat and bingo, a hockey puck! But I ...

Sailing on Inland Seas: How to Make a 14 Foot Boat Bigger

http://inlandpacket.blogspot.com/2015/05/how-to-make-14-foot-boat-bigger.html

Saturday, May 09, 2015. How to Make a 14 Foot Boat Bigger. She might not be the youngest girl at the ball but she'll turn a head or two. To make a 14 foot boat bigger, wax it by hand. I will admit I don't think Esmerelda. Has been this white as long as I've had her. She's a long way from looking new but wow what a difference a good cleaning and wax will do. Same thing happened when I had my Beetle. Shines up a like a new penny. A bungee rigged between the the thwarts and a wooden V on the tiller. No ...

Thursday, April 30, 2015. Beats a Day at the Office. From the Log of SV Esmerelda:. Location: Big Arm Bay. Weather Gusty, Changing, blowing winds. Mainly SW 5kts and climbing steadily. Sailed with Jim Young and. Yes it was quite a first sail! Two fine boats. Sure beats a day at the office! Eventually we got to the business of sailing and it was quite a day for that! Look at that fine lug sail! I'm not quite standing still here but MAN can that boat move! Jim did this for 200 miles in the Texas 200! Makin...

Sailing on Inland Seas: June 2015

Sunday, June 07, 2015. Spend Friday and Saturday on the lake. Installed new bunks on the trailer today. Just another weekend. Even becalmed the lake is wonderful. Motoring in as the light ends. Sunset in Big Arm Bay. Boats on the hard. Not for long though. Wing and wing on the way home. Wednesday, June 03, 2015. Looks a littler closer to this now. So I was cruising the interwebs last night and came across a great blog about a 1958 Lido restoration: https:/ restorealido14.wordpress.com. Just a bit too long.

This will end up being one of this rambly posts that those of us in the boat building/owning blogsphere are infamous for. I have several already on this very blog so add some wood to the fire, get a good foot reast and bile up a pot of tay. We need to talk about the next boat. She really is a crew boat. At least one other hand is so nice to have it's almost a necessit...

Sailing on Inland Seas: October 2014

http://inlandpacket.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Friday, October 10, 2014. A Gift From Polson Bay. Quite recently I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. The flare up that led to my diagnosis seems to be fading but I was left with a real fear about my future as a solo sailor.Would I have the strength to sail alone? Tomorrow we have a wind advisory. Fresh breeze with gale force gusts. And then rain. The signs were not good. The flags hung limp and the water glassy as I drove along the waterfront. I was resigned to the gas usage when just before...The w...

Sailing on Inland Seas: So I Want to Build a Boat...

http://inlandpacket.blogspot.com/p/so-i-want-to-build-boat.html

So I Want to Build a Boat. So you, like me have the urge to build a boat. You've either wanted it your whole life or it simply washed over you in the past few hours. This is normal and perfectly acceptable. You're not the first and are far from the last. I offer this page as a word of kind advice and caution. I figure a list would be the easiest way. 1 Skip the Eight Foot Boat (EFB) Unless it's a PPR. This is a huge temptation. Smaller is easier right? Also they are so cute! Don't fall into this trap.
