Health | The Intergenerational Foundation

NHS spending is weighted heavily towards the elderly, with 50% of the total budget going to the over-65s. This is perhaps not surprising, especially given that most of an average individual’s healthcare costs are incurred in their final years. The problem is demographic: the number of people aged 85-plus, currently about 1.3 million, is set to almost triple by 2035. Sign up for our quarterly newsletter. Tweets by @inter gen. Employment | The Intergenerational Foundation

Unemployment among 16-24 year olds in the UK doubled in the decade to 2012 to over 1.2 million, but has recently fallen back to 625,000 pre-financial crisis levels. But young people aged 16 24 are still three times more likely to be unemployed than the rest of the population 14.4% compared to 5.7% for the population as a whole. For school-leavers and graduates, the pressure to undertake no-pay internships has intensified, with a direct impact on social mobility as only the wealthy can work for free.

Government Debt | The Intergenerational Foundation
http://www.if.org.uk/projects/government-debt
The government has official debts of about 1.56 trillion (approximately 58,000 for each UK household), but it also has other very real and very large liabilities. These include at least 1.3 trillion for the pensions of government employees and 3.8 trillion for the state pension scheme. These pension commitments are almost all unfunded meaning they are not paid out of some massive accumulated fund, but out of current-account taxes. Sign up for our quarterly newsletter. Housing | The Intergenerational Foundation
http://www.if.org.uk/projects/housing
This is having a dramatic effect on society, as younger people put off settling down and starting families because they cannot afford to rent or buy the space required to bring up children. IF is actively researching possible solutions to the housing deadlock in order to free future generations from the burden of spending an unacceptably high proportion of their income on rents or mortgages. IF’s first paper on housing was Hoarding of Housing. Followed by Understanding Downsizing. Section of our website.
