Invercauld Farm

Saturday, June 6, 2015. Well, despite my love of hot chocolate, wood stoves, handmade quilts, movie nights, snowshoeing (not that I did any this year), and, of course, Christmas, it felt like this winter would never end. However, I'm back at this blogging thing, and I thought that to announce that I am still among the living, I'd share a couple of quick snaps as evidence that our beautiful island has emerged from the 540 cm of snow (yes, that's almost 18 feet). Here is starflower ( Lysimachia borealis.

Invercauld Farm: Thoughts on sustainability and self-sufficiency on our homestead

http://www.invercauldfarm.blogspot.com/2015/04/thoughts-on-sustainability-and-self.html

Sunday, April 5, 2015. Thoughts on sustainability and self-sufficiency on our homestead. I recently read a post about defining sustainability. On one of my very favourite blogs, and I've been considering it ever since. It is such a buzzword these days and can sometimes be so meaningless, but it is also something that we're striving for, little by little here, so I think it's important to consider it. April 14, 2015 at 6:06 AM. Rosalyn, I read this several days ago but ran out of time to comment. Its ...

Invercauld Farm: Buried under snow, but still here!

http://www.invercauldfarm.blogspot.com/2015/03/buried-under-snow-but-still-here.html

Wednesday, March 18, 2015. Buried under snow, but still here! I have been quiet on this front the past week or so, but our days have been full. This beautiful boy turned six on Monday! So his birthday celebrations naturally had to include time at a farm, which means time for his mum to snuggle goat babies! With two more snowstorms this week, we are desperately trying to find spring where we can. The snow also didn't interfere with lots of baby snuggles, especially during bum change time. :). I used to ge...

Invercauld Farm: Trees for the future

http://www.invercauldfarm.blogspot.com/2015/03/trees-for-future.html

Sunday, March 29, 2015. Trees for the future. I have been contemplating how best to use some money that I received for my birthday, and what I decided on was to purchase some fruit and nut trees for our property. Trees in and of themselves aren't really necessary, because our one acre is almost entirely wooded, with native species. We also have two plum trees, one that produces dark purple plums and one that grows plums that are peachy-blush in colour. They're supposed to be like a cross between a banana...

http://educatingjackie.com/2015/03/all-about-them-bees

Blogs & Links. All About Them Bees. All About Them Bees. This entry was posted in Bees. March 20, 2015. Since my last post, I’ve had a lot of fun researching bee’s. I was really hoping to find a local beekeeping class, but it doesn’t look like there is one. At least not one that I’ve found yet! There are quite a few bee hives located near to me, so I might just start knocking on doors and asking if they minded me tagging along for a hive inspection. What I was able to find was some great books! I am abou...

Seeds | Educating Jackie

http://educatingjackie.com/2015/02/seeds

Blogs & Links. This entry was posted in In The Garden. February 28, 2015. The first thing I did this year after deciding what I was going to grow, was research the best time to plant the seeds that I bought. I ordered my seeds from www.westcoastseeds.com this year, and they had a lot of helpful information on when to start seeds. (All seeds should be started relative to when the last frost date is in your area). Don’t they start as bulbs? Rather than the peat pots, with the hope of easier/better transpla...

Blogs & Links. Dusting off the Dirt. Dusting off the Dirt. This entry was posted in family. February 21, 2015. Last year, as my garden slowly feel apart (along with the greenhouse that housed it), so did my blog. I lost my motivation. As Jamie and I took apart what was left of the greenhouse (a fierce wind storm ripped it apart), I wondered what would happen to my garden next year. About a month ago I came up with a (hopefully awesome! I’ve started a garden “plan”. Ordered some seeds (via West Coast Seeds.

Blogs & Links. The Plants and the Bees. The Plants and the Bees. This entry was posted in Bees. March 18, 2015. Until recently, Jamie (and Donovan) were both very “anti-bee”, but the tide is turning, and I received the “As long as you put the hive far away from the house, and don’t make me ever help you, ever, sure, get yourself some bees.”. If you have any experience with bees, or know of a great “bee blog” or “bee book”, please let me know! I want to start this journey with as much knowledge as I can.
