An acquired brain injury happens when a part or parts of the brain are starved of oxygen, occurring as a result of:. An accident, most commonly a traffic accident but could also involve drowning or crushing. Illnesses such as meningitis, encephalitis and severe epilepsy. Poisoning from chemical, alcohol or drugs.
