Iowa Girl on the Go. An Iowa travel and discoveries blog. Yes, please / No, thanks. Driving RAGBRAI XLIII: Day 2. Posted July 3, 2015. Here we go on Day 2 of the Des Moines Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa! We left off in Webster City, so the first stop this morning is Boondocks. Not so much a town as a truck stop/motel next to Interstate 35. Alden city leaders really seem to be into the swing of RAGBRAI already, even though the ride doesn’t start for nearly three weeks. We saw signs ...

Iowa Girl on the Go. An Iowa travel and discoveries blog. Yes, please / No, thanks. Posted July 31, 2015. Driving along Hwy. 71 in western Iowa between Carroll and Atlantic, it’s hard to miss Albert the Bull. I mean, he’s said to be the World’s Largest Bull, and who am I to doubt that claim? Albert is kind of cute and funnyfor an enormous concrete bull. He’s 30 feet tall and 33 feet long, weighs 45 tons, and has blue eyes. He stands in a park on the south side of town. Laquo; Family fun in the Twin Cities.

In Praise of Turnitin. Turnitin.com has made my life as an English teacher easier when it comes time to grade term papers. Things Celia wants to do when she grows up. Things Lilah wants to do someday. June 2, 2014. Yesterday’s meeting had a presentation on particle accelerators, and then the kids all made and tested soda bottle rockets. Well, the kids made them. The testing was overseen by the engineer-dad who runs the group with his wife. Some of the kids were keen to pull the pin themselves, to launch the rocket, but Lilah handed her bottle to the dad and ran away as fast as possible. Readying Lilah’s rocket. 8211; I liste...

Things Celia wants to do when she grows up. Things Lilah wants to do someday. Stories from Grandma Brand. November 23, 2015. Ellen Wray Brand (1890-1977). My great grandmother enjoyed writing, even taking some writing classes. For which she generated a number of (mostly partial) stories of her earlier days, as well as some fictional stories. Below are a few I transcribed from her writings, most of which were hand-written on the backside of scrap paper. Margaret Chapman Wray (1859-1942). So it was arrange...

IowaGirlMadeForAfrica | Dreaming of Africa to Dreaming in Africa
Dreaming of Africa to Dreaming in Africa. November 15, 2013. I wanted to be this perfect missionary, you know the 22 year old girl that left it all behind, didn’t look back and kept her focus on her perfect Savior and the work He laid in front of me. HA! I’m not that girl. I wish I was. I’m working to be. Then God has me sit in on a Bible study on James, and BOOM! He refreshes me just like that! I’m still here, I need to keep my mind here, I need to rejoice in my ability to serve these people. My joy for...

Friday, January 18, 2013. Hanging Out The Warsh. Mom had definite rules to hanging out clothes. No such thing as pinning items up willy-nilly. First of all (and most important), you needed a damp rag to wipe down the line before you started. If there were dirty marks on the clothes when they came off the line, you were first in line to rewash them . When you finished taking down all the clothes for the day, you made sure there were no pins left on the line. Mom considered that "tacky". Besides, t...This ...

Iowa Girl on the Go. An Iowa travel and discoveries blog. Yes, please / No, thanks. On the North Shore. Posted March 18, 2018. Ah, the lure of deep, fluffy snow on Minnesota’s North Shore of Lake Superior. I’ve dreamed about seeing this for years, but I’ve always been too nervous to book a weekend getaway nine hours north when winter weather is so unpredictable. But I took a chance a couple of weeks ago and booked a cabin at my favorite getaway, Cascade Lodge. I arrived at Cascade Lodge at around 4:30 in...

iowagirlstrong – Life is short, make your own sunshine!!! :-) My journey with Breast Cancer.
Life is short, make your own sunshine! My journey with Breast Cancer. How can it be, Yesterday was June, today is October. No matter how hard we try, we can’t stop time, and it really seems the older we get, the faster it goes. For me, time has been flying by in nano-blinks (new term, but seems to make sense). Since i last wrote so much has happened in my life. I am back to work full time. Only missed a month 🙂. Hair is growing back. Hair is growing very slowly, started growing around first of July and ...
