Holocaust Remembered | IreneFridsma's Blog
https://irenefridsma.wordpress.com/2012/04/03/holocaust-remembered
Slice of Life, Commentary, Poems, Art. Posted by: Irene Fridsma. April 3, 2012. Yesterday we took three of our grandsons to the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC. The little ones were bored by the black and white photos. They wondered about the man shouting speeches in some other language. “Why is he shouting? 8221; They didn’t understand the word “propaganda.” I wan’t sure if any of the significance of this horrible chapter in history would have any impact on them. Livid (a rant) | IreneFridsma's Blog
https://irenefridsma.wordpress.com/2012/03/26/livid-a-rant
Slice of Life, Commentary, Poems, Art. Posted by: Irene Fridsma. March 26, 2012. Livid Even the sound of the word is intense. Yesterday the airwaves crackled with rhetoric concerning the shooting of a young boy carrying skittles, tea, and wearing a hoodie. The outcry is warranted. Shoot first ask questions later. What bothers me is which events and issues turn us livid. What bothers me is the ease with which we let issues slide from livid to apathetic. A bad call on the basketball court. The amount was w...
Winning and Losing | IreneFridsma's Blog
https://irenefridsma.wordpress.com/2012/03/28/winning-and-losing
Slice of Life, Commentary, Poems, Art. Posted by: Irene Fridsma. March 28, 2012. The art of losing isn’t hard to master (Elizabeth Bishop). We learn it with practice and repetition. With a loss of baby teeth and mittens. But we want to win. We learn winning is good. Winners are the best,. Losers, well, they are losers. Losers are at the bottom of the food chain. Winners are strong fighters. Winners stand above the rest. Losers have to buy the beer. Victors humiliate by rape and violence. One to be better.
Silent Trees | IreneFridsma's Blog

Slice of Life, Commentary, Poems, Art. Posted by: Irene Fridsma. November 25, 2011. In the summer of 1954-approx., there were mysterious deaths of many of the song birds especially the robins in Michigan. We picked up the birds and brought them to MSU for study to see what was killing them. It turned out to be DDT poisoning. This poem was inspired by the events of that summer. The summer of the rented horse. When a young child’s life was simple. We searched for dead birds everywhere. Fill in your details...

personal perspectives | Musings from the Writer's Desk

Musings from the Writer's Desk. Poems, stories and comments by Terri DeVries. A calm that swallows up the chaos. Until nothing remains the same. Except the graceful arc of the letter C. A sense of wonder that overshadows worldliness. Shaves away its hard shell. Shapes it into that silent O on a child’s face. When she sees the burst of fireworks. Transform the July sky. That is what I want. I want the joy that erases junkyard mindsets. And brings back the well of contentment. To stay alive in my soul.

Musings from the Writer's Desk. Poems, stories and comments by Terri DeVries. The Real Tragedy in Charleston. Wow And then the statement made later that we should be focusing on the family of the young man and the families of those who lost loved ones and not focus on the perpetrator. To hold in prayer the families involved in the tragedy,. Sides of the families (please note here the compassion being shown the Roof family as well as the families of those killed). How boring it would be if we all agreed a...

Musings from the Writer's Desk. Poems, stories and comments by Terri DeVries. The sun, a star in its own right. Glares at the moon. The early evening sky. Glowering, the sun sits on the horizon. Spreading rays of pink, purple, gray. As it becomes more angered, the colors. Turn to reds and oranges. And the sun tries to stare down the moon. The moon sits coolly in its own space. Contemplating the sun’s displeasure. But giving not an inch. In fact, moving forward into. At last the sun begins to sink. Into a...

Musings from the Writer's Desk. Poems, stories and comments by Terri DeVries. Eye made up of pellets. Gorilla out of forks. Mural made of leaves. This hung alongside the stairway at the B.O.B. and was made up of belts. Giant belt made up of belts. This eye is made up of hundreds of photos. The center of the eye is a cross. The work was displayed on the side of a building and was done by Todd and Brad Reed, friends I met at my conference. They own Reed Photography up north. The City–recyled materials.

Musings from the Writer's Desk. Poems, stories and comments by Terri DeVries. Everyone asked after Mom. How was Anne? She didn’t look sick. Was she in need of anything? She seemed fine in church on Sunday. Did she get around all right? Was she staying healthy? How was the disease progressing? I try very hard to let those earthly angels know that they are in my prayers along with the one they care for. They are heroes, every one of them. Author of It's A Wonderful Death. Saturday, December 13, 2014. Are you ready to read in 2015? Okay people, 2014 is quickly spiraling into oblivion and before you know it, we will be popping champagne corks and pledging with our whole hearts to work out more, lose weight, not spend so much money, learn the finer points of comma usage, etc. However, I prefer to set myself up for unbridled success, in addition to the list above, so I proudly proclaim that I am taking part in the 2015 Reading Challenge.
