Welcome to our African adventure blog! Sunday, December 27, 2009. Speke Bay, Lake Victoria. Speke Bay is located in the south-eastern part of Lake Victoria in Tanzania, East Africa. It is 15 kilometres from the Serengeti National Park, and 125 kilometres north of Mwanza. Speke Bay is part of Speke Gulf, named after the famous explorer John Hanning Speke, who, in 1858, discovered Lake Victoria to be the source of the Nile. The second largest fresh water lake in the world. The area is ideal for birdwatching.

Welcome to our African adventure blog! Sunday, January 16, 2011. Our day in Amboseli National Park was the hardest day of the whole safari. The extreme drought in this area meant that the animals were under great stress and many, many had perished. The smell was very bad and lots of bloated bodies were visible. We had been told that this park was not to be missed because of its great beauty but unfortunately we did not see that on this trip. The shy ostrich was closer here, probably looking for food.

On our way to Ngorongoro Crater, we stopped to visit Oldupai Gorge, the site where Louis and Mary Leakey did their archaeological dig work. Gouged into the edge of the Salei Plains is Oldupai (or Olduvai) Gorge. The fossils were first noted in 1911 by Professor Kattwinkel. For almost thirty years, Louis and his wife, Mary, found only stone tools, the oldest belonging to the so-called Oldowan industry. Southern ape"), nicknamed Nutcracker Man.

Welcome to our African adventure blog! Sunday, March 21, 2010. Our hotel in the Serengeti was another interesting spot. I'm glad I got these pictures with the data on them. It's so amazing to reflect back on the fact that we were just 2 degrees from the equator at this place! The hotel was built as a series of individual huts with 3 guest rooms in each one. We were on the top floor. We had a balcony that looked out over the hills and trees. The view from our balcony as the sun came up.

Welcome to our African adventure blog! Tuesday, January 10, 2012. Part Two - Eqypt. We left Amboseli and the road took us back close to the Tanzanian border. On the drive out we saw some herds of camels wandering along. I'm not sure who they belonged to or how they got to be in the wild but it added some interest to our trip! At the border, Bob and Clarence were met by a driver and they headed to Moshi, a town at the base of Kilimanjaro, where they would prepare to hike the mountain in the week ahead.
