Jandi Small…paintings of people, pets and places. Archive for July, 2008. A people portrait in progress, part 2: Evan at Gopher Hill. This stage of a painting is the most fun and the most satisfying because it is all about just mushing the brush around quickly. Honestly, I could quit at this point…and I often have. I just noticed I forgot to paint in the “sunnies” he was holding in his left hand in the original sketch. July 26, 2008 at 8:14 pm. The Barn Floor, oil enamel on concrete, 30x40 feet. From tho...

Jandi Small…paintings of people, pets and places. Archive for November, 2008. Gillian’s Farm, part one. Gillian is our beautiful new great-niece and her parents, Lauren and Michael, have decorated her nursery with a farm theme. As a former (and current and forever) farmgirl, I’m thrilled with this and readily agreed to do a painting inspired by the fabric Lauren chose to make the crib bedding. You can see the fabric in the first photo. I enhanced the wiped-out clouds with some warm white paint at the top...

Jandi Small…paintings of people, pets and places. Gillian’s farm…part three. December 18, 2008 at 11:56 am. Here are some more photos of the process of making a farm scene painting for the bedroom of Baby Gillian. My biggest challenge has been to try to keep this light and whimsical and not to spin off into too-realistic. Here’s a close-up…. You can see I’ve added lots more feathers to the hen and given the horse a mane and tail. The chicks are fully feathered and beaked and have little eyes. Please log ...

Jandi Small…paintings of people, pets and places. Archive for September, 2008. Heather portrait…finally finished! Heather.oil on canvas/hardboard panel. Here it is…finally! I’m happy with it now. I painted over that helicoptor-sized pink bow I had put atop her head in an attempt to balance the big pink shoes (scroll down a few posts if you missed that monstrosity of a hair ornament) . I solved the exposed legs problem by painting the dress longer. Cropping solved the shoe problem. I solicited advice from...

Jandi Small…paintings of people, pets and places. Archive for August, 2008. A marker sketch of Heather. I want to paint a portrait of beautiful little Heather…and here is a marker sketch I made to plan that portrait. I like the composition, but I think it needs just a bit more “room” around the subject so she isn’t so crowded by the sides of the canvas. The foliage in the background will be very muted and soft so it won’t detract from her delicate features. August 28, 2008 at 9:05 am. I’m going to ...

Long time no blog. It’s been…um, hectic and interesting…”interesting” as in that old Chinese curse: May you live in interesting times. That’s my potting shed…the barn/studio is, as the sign suggests, off to the right. February 11, 2009 at 5:29 pm. April in Paris, painted in March. A chicken painting, a studio sign...

Jandi Small…paintings of people, pets and places. Archive for October, 2008. FLOWERS, for some fun, for a change (a how-to). Painting in any form is usually a very enjoyable pursuit or passion or obsession, but lately I’ve been doing so many tight and detailed paintings that I wanted to do something FUN. Here is the finished product…and below you will find the steps. Toning the canvas with color. I mixed red and hot pink acrylic paint and covered the canvas surface — front and sides — with it. I spread t...

Jandi Small…paintings of people, pets and places. This is a close up detail of a painting I recently completed of Cooper, a Shih Tzu. And yes, his eyes really are that blue! Rescue dogs make wonderful pets — Cooper here is a shining example of that — and bring years of enjoyment and love to the people who open their hearts and homes to them. Today is Thanksgiving Day and I’m thankful for the people who rescue dogs and the people who adopt the dogs. November 27, 2008 at 11:50 am. At this point in the game...
