Philobiblon: A most amiable king
http://philobiblion.blogspot.com/2006/04/most-amiable-king.html
History (particularly women's history),. Book and theatre reviews,. Politics, science and art. Thursday, April 20, 2006. A most amiable king. My 19th-century blogger Miss Frances Williams Wynn is today indulging in a good old gossip about French royalty. Particularly the Duke of Orleans, Louis Phillipe, later the the last French king. I found that Sir Coutts, like myself, believed what they said to be true, that Louis Philippe had not sought the painful pre-eminence in which he finds himself. History Car...

Philobiblon: How not to travel (and not to write about it)
http://philobiblion.blogspot.com/2006/04/how-not-to-travel-and-not-to-write.html
History (particularly women's history),. Book and theatre reviews,. Politics, science and art. Tuesday, April 25, 2006. How not to travel (and not to write about it). If I ever set out on a journey with the specific aim of writing a book, I'll certainly do the same thing. That intention was only confirmed by reading Frances Mayes' A Year in the World. We stop to gaze at a window arranged with trays of candied fruits, gleaming like jewels. The prince perhaps partook of cedro candito. The other irritating ...

in favor of thinking: April 2007
http://infavorofthinking.blogspot.com/2007_04_01_archive.html
In favor of thinking. Or at least semi-done! I'm done with teaching for the spring term, and I am so happy! So, cleaning, some moviegoing, some cooking and relaxing. An excellent weekend ahead, to be followed soon enough by two months of relative freedom! No wonder I woke up feeling so happy today! The most interesting moments in First Snow. I was interested in seeing this movie, though, because I think it's part of a larger Zeitgeist. Or what if the future is. Just a repeat of the past ( Deja Vu. Last n...

Tech and Being Mindful. Dissecting Higher Education in Connecticut ». Game of Thrones and Plot Lines. Watcher, I enjoy reading what other people have to say. R and I talk about the show a lot and we have interesting reactions. I’ve followed the reactions to the “wedding” violence, the “rape” violence, and the unexpected “snuffing” of a variety of characters, from Ned to Shireen. The problem is if Ramsay does “get his” then what and so what? June 18, 2015 at 7:43 am. Tech and Being Mindful. Chile Theme by...

in favor of thinking: doing her part for the planet
http://infavorofthinking.blogspot.com/2008/12/doing-her-part-for-planet.html
In favor of thinking. Doing her part for the planet. Over the past couple years, several companies have switched to biodegradable packing peanuts made from cornstarch derivatives. I don't know what else must be in them, but we found Old Girl happily snacking away on a few yesterday. Cornstarch itself doesn't seem like something that would be particularly scented or tasty, but dogs sure seem to like the peanuts. Perhaps that's a secret tactic for degrading them?
