JB's Wine World: July 2010
http://jb-wineworld.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html
Monday, July 26, 2010. Hot Summers and Rosés. As we all enjoy this tremendous summer heatwave what do we drink? The usual SavBlanc somehow doesn't seem to work. I found a superb Traminer from the Bulgarian producer Slaviantsi that is absolutely brilliant but my mind like so many turn to rosé for sipping on the patio. We've been drinking two in particular, a very reasonably priced Corsican and a "twice the price" one from Provence. TERRA VECCHIA ROSÉ RESERVE. The CHATEAU ROUBINE Cru Classé 2009 Rosé.

JB's Wine World: December 2009
http://jb-wineworld.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html
Monday, December 21, 2009. Corbieres - Much under-rated wine. Not the best wine from this producer - I prefer the "Simone Descamps". Or the " Reserve". I think Corbieres is a much over looked wine. Ok I have a penchant for mediterranean grapes and the blend of syrah, grenache, carignan, mourvedre and cinsault does leave people confused as to what is a true corbieres taste. However as always you need to know your producers. Here are two of mine: Castelmaure Grand Cuvee. Tuesday, December 1, 2009. Even mor...

JB's Wine World: January 2010
http://jb-wineworld.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html
Tuesday, January 26, 2010. Alcohol Abuse in the UK. As early as the first millennium of the Christian era drinking was such an integral part of Germanic culture that no social or political decision was made without the involvement of heavy drinking. And the Anglo Saxon inhabitants of England were seen as the worst offenders with more references to intoxication there than anywhere else on the continent. So our North European habit is well established. Don’t penalize those of us who are responsible d...

JB's Wine World: May 2010
http://jb-wineworld.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html
Tuesday, May 18, 2010. At the end of April I hosted a tatsing of chenin blanc from the Loire. The Loire is close to the northern limits of commercial grape growing. Long hot summers are the exceptions rather than the rule and there is always concern about whether the grapes will ripen sufficiently. Believes that if the grapes are harvested too soon then the acidity can produce “one of the nastiest wines in the world”! The wines chosen were:. Château des Vaults, Clos du Papillon, 2005. Supremely crafted V...

JB's Wine World: Classic South, Sauvignon Blanc
http://jb-wineworld.blogspot.com/2010/06/classic-south-sauvignon-blanc.html
Tuesday, June 22, 2010. Classic South, Sauvignon Blanc. I took delivery this weekend of a case of NZ SavBlanc from Naked Wines. ( http:/ www.nakedwines.com/. The only criticism I would have of Naked is that gave me a 40 pound voucher that I can't find a way of redeeming. Perhaps they will enlighten me, thouggh at their prices it may mean they give me money! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Valérie Rouselle-Riboud, owner of Chateau Roubine. Rasteau elevated to AOC status. Classic South, Sauvignon Blanc.

JB's Wine World: November 2009
http://jb-wineworld.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html
Wednesday, November 25, 2009. Shanahans, Ripasso and Dublin's Delights. The first mistake was not realising that Ireland were playing France at soccer on the Saturday (but who would know that! But worse they were playing Australia at rugby on the Sunday. (that I should have known). Still we were there from Thursday so time to sample some of Dublins pleasures. The meal was ok but the wine was a great bonus - Tommasi Ripasso. Meanwhile at Shanahans on the Saturday the meal was outstanding, the staff extrem...

JB's Wine World: June 2010
http://jb-wineworld.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html
Tuesday, June 29, 2010. Rasteau elevated to AOC status. It's taken more than 8 years to achieve the elevation but it is well deserved. Vines were first planted here by the Romans around 30BC and were used mainly to make sweet wine of which they were so fond - strange that this should not be revived again until 1935! Two of my favourite producers are Domain la Soumade. And the Cooperative at Rasteau that now uses the brand name Ortas. Cotes du Rhone Les Violettes. 90% syrah and 10% syrah. Acacia flowe...

JB's Wine World: Wine Fraud
http://jb-wineworld.blogspot.com/2010/05/wine-fraud.html
Thursday, May 6, 2010. Many of the perpetrators of wine related fraud in the UK over the last 20 years have escaped prosecution or have received low level sentences. So fraud appears to be a profitable, low risk career. Jim Budd. The real problem lies in human nature itself. If it’s possible to make a fast profit, legitimately or not then people will try to do it. If people see a bargain then they will go for it, however unbelievable it appears. JB's Wine World: The Maze of Alcohol Pricing
http://jb-wineworld.blogspot.com/2010/09/maze-of-alcohol-pricing.html
Wednesday, September 1, 2010. The Maze of Alcohol Pricing. Suddenly there is a flurry of activity in the drinks business around "minimum pricing". And "below cost pricing". But what does it mean and what if anything would either achieve. In the case of the Asda wine since VAT is variable the "cost " of the wine is 8p! I'm impressed by the ingenuity that can produce, bottle, label and transport a bottle of wine for 8p. Are to decide whether producers of spirits can sell directly to consumers so dismantlin...
